CNN<\/a>, fans of that adaptable-use style \u2014 which is marked by wooden tones, black beams and prominent color-blocked panels \u2014 are one step closer to incorporating it into their own lives.<\/p>\nThe Eames Office has announced the made-to-order Eames Pavilion System, a prefab kit that lets any buyer assemble their own Eames-style homes \u2014 or exhibition spaces, accessory dwelling units, stores or offices, as the uses are flexible. The look, though not the exact Eames House in California \u2014 which sustained smoke damage in 2025 due to the Palisades Fires and underwent months of restoration \u2014 greatly resembles the architects\u2019 principles.<\/p>\n

Single-story designs will be ready to purchase come fall, while double-story ones will be available to purchase at a later time. They\u2019ll be built by the Spanish design brand Kettal and people in more than 80 countries worldwide will be able to get them. The starting cost: some $260 per square foot, which means an average-size 2,000-square-foot prefab structure would run $518,000. (Visitors at the Triennale di Milano in April and May will be able to walk through one- and two-story examples.)<\/p>\n
\u201cFor many years, people have thought of the Eames House as a kind of singularity,\u201d the architects\u2019 grandson, Eames Demetrios, told CNN. Demetrios and Eckart Maise, former chief design officer for the Swiss furniture company Vitra, had long aimed to bring the couple\u2019s aesthetic into prefab designs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith research, we\u2019ve really proven that they were always thinking about this idea of a system,\u201d Demetrios told the outlet. \u201cIn a way, the Eames House is a prototype.\u201d<\/p>\n
Indeed, the Eames House was part of the architects\u2019 Case Study project \u2014 a method for contemporary family living in the wake of World War II.<\/p>\n

The prefab Pavilion System brings it through to today, by additionally incorporating elements from structures such as the next-door Entenza House and the open-plan Shelter House concept. Never built, that latter single-story study, which the couple referred to as the \u201csupermarket house,\u201d was meant to come at little cost.<\/p>\n
\u201cTogether, these projects articulate an architectural logic that the Eames Pavilion System condenses into a modular construction kit: a rational grid, a small footprint with maximum volume and a structure capable of interior flexibility and long-term adaptability,\u201d according to the release. \u201cThe system is a living expression of the Eameses\u2019 belief that design should respond gracefully and intelligently to the way people live and work.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prefab pavilions will have interchangeable roof types, wooden accents, bold black beams and options to customize the exteriors with color-blocked paneling and windows, to name some options. The goal is to allow for many configurations no matter the kit purchased.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were always interested in this multiplication aspect \u2014 how can this effort be transformed?\u201d Demetrios told CNN. \u201cThey wanted to universalize. If you look at all the Eames\u2019 work, you keep coming across that idea.
