It\u2019s been just over seven years<\/a> since Roseanne<\/a> Barr was fired from her self-titled series\u2019 successful relaunch following a racist tweet about former President Barack Obama\u2019s adviser Valerie Jarrett\u2026 which she infamously blamed on \u201cAmbien tweeting.\u201d It has, perhaps not coincidentally, been about the same amount of time since \u201cSmurfs\u201d star John Goodman<\/a> has spoken to his sitcom wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. \u201cWe haven\u2019t talked for about seven or eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goodman, of course, went on to anchor the spinoff \u201cThe Conners<\/a>,\u201d which garnered consistently positive reviews<\/a>, lasted seven seasons and 112 episodes without Barr, whose \u201cRoseanne\u201d character was killed off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think [the\u00a0\u2018Roseanne\u2019\u00a0reboot] was going to go beyond the initial five or six episodes,\u201d Goodman said. \u201cI thought it\u2019d be a one-off thing, and then we got picked up, and Roseanne got fired. I thought that was it, and as soon as they dismissed the cast, I picked up\u00a0\u2018Righteous Gemstones.\u2019 Then we got to do the show again as\u00a0\u2018The Conners.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know how long it would last, but I sure enjoyed it while I was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an expression of his goodwill to the fans, \u201cThe Conners\u201d ended in April with a scene of Goodman alone, breaking the fourth wall and saying \u201cGood night\u201d while sitting on the show\u2019s iconic couch. \u201cI wanted to do it, and they let me, and they kept it. I thought it was just us saying, \u2018Good night, folks. Thank you,’\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Goodman\u2019s career remains busy as ever. In addition to voicing Papa Smurf in the upcoming animated \u201cSmurfs\u201d film, out July 18, he\u2019s also recently lent his voice to series like \u201cThe Freak Brothers\u201d and \u201cMonsters at Work\u201d (reprising Sulley from \u201cMonsters, Inc.\u201d). His HBO series \u201cThe Righteous Gemstones\u201d aired its final episode in May, and he\u2019s set to appear in the next Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu film alongside Tom Cruise and Sandra H\u00fcller, due for release in October 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of funny moments in it,\u201d Goodman said, describing the yet-untitled comedy. \u201cTom is a force of nature, and it\u2019s fun to just hang on and see what he\u2019s going to do. He\u2019s a 63-year-old professional athlete and artist.
