Gomez has since described this discovery as a relief, although not an easy path.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent episode of the \u201cFriends Keep Secrets\u201d podcast, Gomez \u2013 the co-founder of mental health publication Wondermind \u2013 shared details about her journey to diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow musician and <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/19\/photos\/selena-gomez-and-benny-blanco-have-a-bowling-date-night-and-more-star-snaps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">husband Benny Blanco<\/a> asked his wife if she knew she\u00a0was bipolar\u00a0before being officially diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,\u201d she responded. \u201cI think people were just assuming \u2013 and I would try multiple therapists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s actually really hard when we\u2019re talking about these things, and for me to go, \u2018Go get a therapist.\u2019 All of it is so \u2026 complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former Disney star announced her diagnosis in 2020 during an Instagram Live video call. Disney via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Gomez detailed how her diagnosis required talking to \u201cmultiple different people,\u201d stressing the importance of not giving up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/14\/celebrity-news\/selena-gomez-packs-on-the-pda-with-benny-blanco-in-new-photos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blanco revealed that<\/a> Gomez sometimes experiences a\u00a0manic episode\u00a0without recognizing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll start to realize she\u2019s having it after it\u2019s happening, and sometimes she doesn\u2019t even remember when it\u2019s happening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a delicate thing because \u2026 you\u2019re not supposed to, technically, talk to the person about it while they\u2019re deep in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow musician and husband Benny Blanco asked his wife if she knew she\u00a0was bipolar\u00a0before being officially diagnosed. That\u2019s why all the other people were able to get over things quickly, and I wasn\u2019t.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gomez added, \u201cI\u2019d act out of fear, I\u2019d act out of love, I\u2019d act out of passion, it was all inconsistent. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The actress encouraged others that no matter the diagnosis, \u201cyou are not defined by a term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just informative to seek and talk and listen to podcasts or listen to certain things that will help you get information,\u201d she said. \u201cI do believe there is a lot of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Signs of bipolar disorder<\/p>\n<p>The actress encouraged others that no matter the diagnosis, \u201cyou are not defined by a term.\u201d Billboard via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>About 2.8% of adults in the U.S. have experienced bipolar in the last year, while 4.4% experience it during their lifetime, according to the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly called manic depression or \u201cmanic-depressive disorder,\u201d bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy and activity levels, affecting the ability to carry out daily tasks.<\/p>\n<p>This can include emotional highs, referred to as mania or hypomania, and lows,\u00a0known as depression, per Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms can differ depending on bipolar type.<\/p>\n<p>Manic and hypomanic episodes typically include three or more of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>Increased activity, energy or agitation<\/p>\n<p>Feeling too self-confident, or having a distorted sense of well-being<\/p>\n<p>Needing less sleep than usual<\/p>\n<p>Speaking quickly or being unusually talkative<\/p>\n<p>Having racing thoughts or jumping from one topic to the next<\/p>\n<p>Being easily distracted<\/p>\n<p>Making poor decisions<\/p>\n<p>About 2.8% of adults in the U.S. have experienced bipolar in the last year, while 4.4% experience it during their lifetime.
