The Detroit Red Wings have signed top goaltending prospect Trey Augustine to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in 2026-27, the team announced Tuesday. While the ELC does not begin until next season, Augustine will report to AHL Grand Rapids on an amateur tryout agreement and join the Griffins in their AHL playoff chase, where he will play alongside fellow promising young netminder Sebastian Cossa.<\/p>\n
Augustine, a native of South Lyon, Mich., was a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and has spent the last three years starring for Michigan State. He has started at least 30 games in each of his three seasons for the Spartans, leading them to at least a share of three consecutive Big Ten regular-season championships (2024 and 2026 outright), and Big Ten Tournament titles in 2024 and 2025. He was a first-team NCAA West All-American in 2025, and this season is a finalist for the Hobey Baker after posting a .929 save percentage and 2.11 goals-against average for the Spartans.<\/p>\n
Michigan State was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Saturday in an overtime loss to Wisconsin, enabling Augustine to turn pro.<\/p>\n
Augustine\u2019s track record is sterling, dating back to his time at the U.S. National Team Development Program, where he helped the United States win a World Under-18 Championship gold medal. He then backstopped the U.S. to two consecutive World Junior Championship golds in 2024 and 2025. While he lacks prototypical size for a top goaltending prospect at 6-foot-1, his combination of individual and team success immediately makes him one of the most intriguing prospects in the Red Wings\u2019 professional ranks.<\/p>\n
Goaltending prospects take longer to develop than skaters, though, and fans shouldn\u2019t expect to see Augustine in Detroit quickly. Cossa, for example, is already in his third full AHL season. Augustine\u2019s three years of college hockey should give him a strong baseline, and if he can quickly translate his game to the pro ranks, he could move slightly quicker through the system.<\/p>\n
Augustine figures to take on a meaningful workload in Grand Rapids next season, with Cossa projected to make the leap to Detroit. In the shorter term, it will be interesting to see what kind of opportunity Augustine receives with the Griffins, who have legitimate Calder Cup aspirations as one of the league\u2019s elite teams.<\/p>\n
Cossa has been the workhorse all year and figures to remain as such. However, getting Augustine a feel for the level could be a valuable experience going into the summer, especially with Grand Rapids having already clinched its division.
