Who knows what\u2019s happening with Sony\u2019s next-gen hardware plans at this point? The platform holder is going to have some big decisions to make if it really is still targeting a 2027 release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because everything is getting more expensive<\/a>, particularly in the tech space. A squeeze on components caused by AI companies, in addition to general economic headwinds \u2013 including tariffs introduced by the US government \u2013 has pushed the price of the PS5 Pro<\/a> up to an unprecedented $899.99.<\/p>\n

Some believe the PS6 could cost as much as $1,000<\/a> if it launches next year, although there\u2019s still debate over whether Sony would charge that much.<\/p>\n

One other question that remains is how the company will handle the console\u2019s handheld model.<\/p>\n

Those of you who\u2019ve been reading the site for a while will know there\u2019s strong evidence to suggest<\/a> the Japanese giant is plotting a full-blown PS6 portable<\/a>, that will share its library with its existing devices.<\/p>\n

Writing on NeoGAF<\/a> in a thread about the hypothetical handheld\u2019s power, notorious snoop KeplerL2 said the device\u2019s \u201cGPU is a bit ahead of [Xbox Series S] in raster and massively ahead in raytracing\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added that he believes the next-gen version of PSSR<\/a> \u2013 Sony\u2019s AI-based upscaling solution, which it\u2019s developed in collaboration with AMD for the PS5 Pro \u2013 will enable it to extract more power out of a smaller form factor.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s still unclear whether the handheld will play full-blown PS6 games, but with the next generation likely to have a long cross-gen period, it\u2019s unclear how much that will matter.<\/p>\n

Recently it was rumoured that you may even be able to dock the device<\/a>, a bit like the Switch 2.<\/p>\n

But the details around all this still seem a bit shaky to us.<\/p>\n

Is Sony really going to introduce an expensive, dockable handheld alongside its next-gen console? Even ignoring recent price hikes, isn\u2019t it going to be prohibitively expensive to buy both?<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll probably need to wait until Sony officially unveils its plans to get a clearer picture \u2013 and that\u2019s assuming its plans haven\u2019t changed, of course.<\/p>\n
