Larry\u00a0Gagosian\u00a0is known as the world\u2019s most powerful art dealer, but not every move he\u2019s made has been a success.<\/p>\n

In 2016,\u00a0Gagosian\u00a0opened a San Francisco location near SF MoMA, but the timing was off. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt just failed,\u201d\u00a0Gagosian\u00a0recalls in a new Elle Decor<\/a> profile. \u201cI mean, nobody showed up. It was so depressing. I\u2019d fly up there for an opening, and there\u2019s nobody there. I\u2019d go, What the f*** am I doing here?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He told the upscale mag\u2019s latest issue that a former Geneva location, which opened in 2010 and closed, was also a mistake. \u201cI didn\u2019t fully get the Swiss,\u201d he muses. (Larry, you are not alone.) <\/p>\n

These days, with 18 global locations, including his starry Beverly Hills spot<\/a>,\u00a0Gagosian\u00a0is prepping to unveil his latest New York space at 980 Madison Avenue. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s coming full circle with a planned street-level gallery at the same UES spot where he first opened in 1989.\u00a0Gagosian\u00a0had office space and galleries upstairs in the same building, but he\u2019s being displaced after Bloomberg Philanthropies bought up most of the property. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was pretty devastating,\u201d\u00a0Gagosian, whose office had been at the address for nearly 40 years, tells the Hearst magazine. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s moved his staff to Chelsea and elsewhere, but, \u201cTo me it was very important that I stay in the building\u2026 I\u2019m excited about being on the street. Artists in particular thought [being upstairs] was a little off-putting. So we\u2019ve eliminated that. We\u2019re much more transparent now.\u201d <\/p>\n

His sushi restaurant Kappo Masa remains downstairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
