Academy Award\u2013winning writer and director Bong Joon Ho\u2019s<\/a> first animated feature, \u201cAlly<\/a>,\u201d isn\u2019t even here yet, and look, we\u2019re already learning so much from it. Like, is a \u201cpiglet squid\u201d<\/a> \u2014 the species at the center of the film<\/a> \u2014 real? You bet it is, and it\u2019s adorable.<\/p>\n

Director Bong and his team have today revealed a first look at \u201cAlly,\u201d which has been in development since 2019. Bong directed the film and co-wrote the script alongside \u201cSleep\u201d filmmaker Jason Yu<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Per today\u2019s announcement, the film follows \u201ca curious and endearing piglet squid living in the uncharted depths of the South Pacific Ocean. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary. But when a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, her peaceful world is suddenly thrown into danger. Alongside her colorful and loyal \u2014 yet unlikely \u2014 companions, Ally is thrust into an extraordinary journey that will take her all the way to the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s press release also notes that the film is \u201cinspired by remarkable real-life marine creatures, [and] explores themes of friendship and courage, as encounters between humans and the creatures of the deep reshape both worlds. Set against visually stunning underwater worlds and epic action sequences, the film is a family adventure blending humor and emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film will be completed in the first half of 2027, with a worldwide theatrical release in the same year. \u201cAlly\u201d will be the first Bong joint released since his 2025 feature \u201cMickey 17.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Financing and distribution are handled by CJ ENM, Penture Invest, and Path\u00e9, with Barunson C&C overseeing production. Seo Woo-sik will produce the film marking his third collaboration with Director Bong, following \u201cMother\u201d and \u201cOkja.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n

The film brings together leading creative talents from 12 countries, including South Korea, with key contributors such as animation supervisor Jae Hyung Kim (\u201cToy Story 4,\u201d \u201cInside Out\u201d), supervising producer David Lipman (\u201cShrek\u201d franchise), and production designer Marcin Jakubowski (\u201cKlaus\u201d). DNEG, the world-renowned studio behind \u201cInception\u201d and \u201cDune,\u201d is also onboard contributing expertise in high-end 3D animation.<\/p>\n

Path\u00e9 will handle distribution in France, Benelux, Switzerland and West Africa while CJ and Penture will distribute in South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia.
