The hope was that Pochettino would get some clarity as to which way the roster winds are blowing, but if anything, the picture surrounding the team seems cloudier than it was before. Pochettino doesn&#8217;t necessarily mind this, given his preference for making sure his players are comfortable with being uncomfortable, but the reality is that a combination of injuries and some lackluster performances have created additional uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>The present state of the depth chart also aligns with Pochettino&#8217;s comment, when he announced the most recent list of players on March 17, that this wasn&#8217;t his final roster. It makes sense given that so much can and probably will happen between now and the final roster announcement on May 26. And following a window in which the U.S. fell 5-2 defeat to <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4084f797-3877-2af0-b70f-570d25a1a141\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Belgium<\/a> and a 2-0 setback to <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"12433baf-649d-7f4f-7233-6db63a5f62f4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=482\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Portugal<\/a>, it seems as if there are more questions than answers.<\/p>\n<p>With less than two months to go until the final <a data-league-guid=\"34f478c4-cf9a-35da-abd5-33db021e09d2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/league\/_\/name\/FIFA.WORLD\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA World Cup<\/a> roster is announced, here&#8217;s how the U.S. depth chart is playing out.<\/p>\n<p>Goalkeepers (3)<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/17606.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"56bd8f73-7610-b0d5-fe90-b517cd9ae61d\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/252974\/matthew-freese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Freese<\/a> | 27 years old | <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"d902d6f8-8673-29e3-15d9-3ef4c12ce9d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=17606\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York City FC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a bit of a surprise when Freese found himself on the bench for the Belgium match given that he had started 12 in a row, although he probably benefited from the night off given the collectively poor performance by the team&#8217;s defense. Reinstated to the starting XI on Tuesday, he was sharp enough against Portugal that he probably solidified his spot as the team&#8217;s starting keeper. Now he just needs to maintain his form at the club level.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/189.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"878117f8-9033-3976-be0f-11ca78bd2597\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/303794\/matt-turner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Turner<\/a> | 31 | <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"69c60f39-684f-de4e-dd16-cffcf2bca76d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New England Revolution<\/a> (on loan from Lyon)<\/p>\n<p>Turner wasn&#8217;t the main culprit in the aforementioned defeat to Belgium, delivering some sharp saves, but he also gave up some juicy rebounds that were either converted into goals or should have been. His distribution also was suspect at times. He has been solid so far this season for Chicago, with a goals prevented mark of 1.17, and he was preferred to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"1b4f9abf-c0e1-39ea-ce15-d3892274e0aa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=183\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Columbus Crew<\/a>&#8216;s <a data-player-guid=\"f9c39a48-965a-e587-2057-6826da6e8b91\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/275080\/patrick-schulte\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Schulte<\/a>, who was called in only when <a data-player-guid=\"952269c7-674a-39eb-b868-0fd5391f3747\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/315972\/roman-celentano\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roman Celentano<\/a> was injured. Does that make his spot vulnerable? It might if he can&#8217;t shake off the injury. That would be a brutal development for a player who missed out on the 2022 World Cup because of an Achilles injury.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/256.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"bc9a0875-925f-e602-15f1-f81760e7151d\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/228619\/auston-trusty\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Auston Trusty<\/a> | 27 | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/club\/_\/id\/256\/celtic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Celtic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The March window wasn&#8217;t as successful for Trusty as November&#8217;s was, as he looked shaky in the first half against Portugal &#8212; including his positioning on the first goal &#8212; even as things improved for him in the second half. Out of the center backs on this hypothetical roster, his spot is the most under threat. Finding some consistency at Celtic in what has been an up-and-down season is critical at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>Fullbacks (4)<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/148.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"254b39a6-cfff-9b84-ef34-36ac07fc8f59\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/266291\/sergino-dest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sergi\u00f1o Dest<\/a> | 25 | <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"6bca5a12-0a2e-45ef-82b0-b10bcf9c6ce5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=148\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PSV Eindhoven<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hamstring injury Dest suffered on March 8 was a blow for the U.S. Just how big remains to be seen. He has publicly put forward a positive attitude with regard to his recovery, but when he&#8217;ll be back is still to be determined. For now, Dest is still a presumed starter, either at right back or right wingback, but there will be some doubts until he makes it back onto the field.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/370.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"97f92287-b26d-c59a-5d43-db2c63cb7603\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/222396\/antonee-robinson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antonee Robinson<\/a> | 28 | <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"14acbd22-f709-1525-c5ab-1cb3ec8d1696\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=370\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fulham<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the positives from the window was the return of &#8220;Jedi.&#8221; Robinson hadn&#8217;t played for the U.S. since November 2024, primarily because of a knee injury, but he looked solid in the two games, and even produced an assist against Belgium when <a data-player-guid=\"80f154c0-ef1f-6615-9238-d22a3d6cd0e1\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/256715\/weston-mckennie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weston McKennie<\/a> redirected his corner kick. His spot on the World Cup roster should be secure given the minutes he has already logged under Pochettino, but he&#8217;ll need to raise his game if he&#8217;s called upon this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Central midfielders (5)<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/349.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"4d70b696-ec86-7ac2-2239-881e594c538f\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/222776\/tyler-adams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Adams<\/a> | 27 | <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"1e76c2fe-68a5-3950-8881-47e916c0c115\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=349\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFC Bournemouth<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just as Adams seemed to be fully recovered from the knee injury he sustained in December, he was felled by a quadriceps injury just days before the roster was announced, ruling him out for the window. Adams is expected to be back in the next week or two, and U.S. fans will be hoping he can get a consistent run of matches as he remains a vital cog in the midfield. The team badly missed his tenacity against Belgium and Portugal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9726.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"651f111a-cdc1-ca12-5aff-21a1b763d736\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/216617\/cristian-roldan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cristian Roldan<\/a> | 30 | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/9726\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Sounders FC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roldan plays with a style and grit that Pochettino values. He&#8217;s also a glue guy in the locker room, meaning his value extends beyond the field. It was mildly surprising to see him log only 56 minutes in the two March friendlies, but as things stand, his name should among those called when the roster is named in May.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1068.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"be7b4010-2fe0-84a0-1239-cb62418ccdc9\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/290802\/johnny-cardoso\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Cardoso<\/a>  | 24 | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/1068\/Atletico-Madrid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atl\u00e9tico Madrid<\/a><\/p>\n<p>U.S. fans are still waiting to see an inspired performance from Cardoso. He played 45 minutes against Belgium and then came off during a pre-planned substitution because of a minor leg ailment. It could be argued that his play against Belgium was his best in a U.S. shirt, but that is a low bar. He was &#8230; OK. At this stage, it feels as if Pochettino would be taking a gamble by naming him to the final roster, but for now he keeps his spot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/167.png&#038;w=126&#038;site=espnfc.png\" width=\"50\"\/><a data-player-guid=\"624404ac-7173-3884-89f9-2c34f5c3c406\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/303308\/tanner-tessmann\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tanner Tessmann<\/a> | 24 | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/167\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lyon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tessmann&#8217;s pairing with Cardoso just seemed awkward, for whatever reason. Operating beside Adams appears to be a more natural fit, especially with his height allowing him to win plenty of aerial duels. Tessmann has been scuffling a bit of late at Lyon. His pinpoint delivery on set pieces is unquestioned, but he has come out second best at times in physical duels at international level. No goals in 2026 for club or country, and he has gone eight consecutive matches with the U.S. without scoring, the longest such spell of his career.
