The number of these players has decreased over the decades as the league office has cracked down on the extracurricular activity on the floor.

Still, for those who were lucky enough to live through previous eras, there were a handful of names who embraced the “enforcer” label with pride during their careers. With the league’s dynamic shift, we’ve moved from enforcers to entertainers.

It’s becoming increasingly rare to occupy a roster spot purely for a player whose sole intention is to impose his physical will on one or two possessions every other game to send a message. Nowadays, teams are finding that having a viable player at the end of the bench who can produce is far more beneficial in the grand scheme of things.

Nevertheless, even though the game has changed, it’s important to celebrate previous enforcers in the Association who made their name by bringing the fight to the opposition.

Arguably the greatest of them all was former New York Knicks forward Charles Oakley, who, despite retiring over two decades ago, still holds grudges to this day. It’s not just any random names he wants to fight either — Oakley still has his sights set on boxing Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley.

Cultural shift and dropping names

Gone are the days when skill came second to how strong and intimidating a player was. Nowadays, on some level, players need finesse, specialized attributes that contribute to the box score, and a baseline level of marketability in an NBA landscape that cares more than ever about the image of their brand.

With that in mind, Oakley understands that the NBA floor may no longer be the right place to go toe-to-toe with opponents. In his eyes, the next best arena to settle player differences is the boxing ring. Fundamentally, to him, entering a boxing ring feels like the final form of the 1980s–1990s tough-guy archetype, and he’s got a list of names he’s ready to throw hands with.

“First one is Shaq. Second one Barkley; them two,” Oak shared. “I know he’s about 75 pounds heavier, but I’ll take him. I got pretty good hands. I’m gonna be moving though, so. But it’ll be fun, I would definitely do that. I still got the little bob and weave in me.”

Related: Patrick Beverley believes LeBron James should earn $50M annually from the NBA: “I just feel like the NBA owes LeBron so much”

Letting go

We know Oakley is cut from traditional cloth, but we also have to acknowledge that this is a man over 60. There comes a point when the tough act needs to be put aside, and players need to leave the past behind.

In more ways than one, Oakley’s targeting of two of the most iconic, larger-than-life names in NBA history — Shaq and Barkley — is a metaphor for his entire career — fighting giants, literally and figuratively.

He has always been willing to challenge the stars, not befriend them or try to get on their good side. It feels as though Oakley actually likes to be the underdog, or likes to carry a chip on his shoulder, no matter how unnecessary it may be.

As for Shaq and Barkley, both players have, over time, publicly stated that they have let their career beefs go. Both of them believe life is too short, and ironically, Barkley thinks they’re far too old to be carrying grudges all these decades later. Unfortunately, it looks as though Oakley still feels the need to prove he never feared status or size, even with grey hairs showing.

Sometimes it feels as though Oak can’t distinguish the difference between physical toughness and competitive toughness. Shaq and Chuck were competitively tough, whereas Oakley wanted to be physical for the sake of it, no matter the ramifications for himself or his team.

Insecurity may be taking it too far, but it’s clear Oakley sees himself as the last man from a generation who still polices the sport the “old way.”

There is no question that Oakley is widely respected in NBA circles for what he achieved during his career, but his archetype no longer exists in the modern league. No player could realistically replicate his persona because, for all intents and purposes, the league would never allow it. We have players like Draymond Green who tread that fine line carefully, but, in truth, he isn’t close to Oak’s level as an enforcer.

Social media, stricter rules and player branding has largely killed the traditional enforcer role. Even still, Oakley’s desire to box both Shaq and Barkley is very much part of his ongoing critique of the modern game, given that he’s repeatedly said today’s players “wouldn’t survive the 90s.”

Related: “He needed to heal, and I couldn’t heal him ” – Charles Oakley’s wife on how MSG incident affected their marriage

This story was originally published by Basketball Network on Apr 2, 2026, where it first appeared in the Off The Court section.
