{"id":56139,"date":"2025-08-03T20:41:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T20:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/56139\/"},"modified":"2025-08-03T20:41:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T20:41:14","slug":"online-gambling-makes-sense-when-working-hard-doesnt-cut-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/56139\/","title":{"rendered":"Online gambling makes sense when working hard doesn\u2019t cut it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), highlighted the present administration\u2019s recent achievements, as well as several key working points for the government moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the president\u2019s lengthy one hour and eleven-minute speech, several government officials have lamented the address\u2019 insufficient content.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Risa Hontiveros, who described the speech as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qCkTSqPj0ZI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cmanipis na manipis,\u201d<\/a> had hoped that the president would touch on the numerous wage hike bills filed for the 20th Congress. \u201cParang din siya \u2018business as usual na SONA.\u2019 Sayang na-miss nila yung opportunity na magbigay ng assessment pagkatapos ng isang midterm elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/2088577\/how-senators-reacted-to-bbms-4th-sona\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva<\/a> was dismayed that the president did not mention anything about online gambling. \u201cWe reiterate our call for a total ban on online gambling because it wreaks havoc on the lives of our people. It destroys families, it traps people in addiction, and it offers no real value to nation-building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/2088550\/marcos-2025-sona-a-speech-full-of-warnings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In fourth Sona, Marcos touts gains but issues strong warnings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Online gambling among Filipinos<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva, who is leading the charge for a nationwide ban on online gambling, initially filed Senate Bill No. 1281 or the \u201cAnti-Online Gambling Act\u201d back in 2022, and seeks to once again push for its passing in the 20th Congress. Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri has also publicly supported the bill\u2014calling online gambling a \u201csilent pandemic\u201d that\u2019s afflicting the masses.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposed act, all forms of online gambling, such as digital betting platforms, mobile applications, and websites, will be prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.senate.gov.ph\/lisdata\/3931235744!.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bill\u2019s explanatory note<\/a>, Villanueva painted a dire situation: a 19-year-old student arrested for being unable to pay a \u20b1500,000 debt in cockfighting or e-sabong; students caught stealing from their parents to place bets; and even a police officer who robbed an LBC branch.<\/p>\n<p>In light of growing clamor for a nationwide crackdown on online gambling, several operators have called for a logical approach instead. \u201cIf there are new standards to meet or better ways to protect players, we will act swiftly and responsibly. But please, do not condemn an industry, and the 50,000 Filipino families who rely on it, without hearing the facts first,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/business.inquirer.net\/537174\/online-gambling-is-a-manageable-form-of-recreation-in-ph-study-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DigiPlus chairman Eusebio Tanco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"2025 State of the Nation Address\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/asset_67379317-06b1-4929-911e-cc676a451ea0-scaled.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Photo from the 2025 State of the Nation Address<\/p>\n<p>Rather than pushing for an outright ban, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/2089367\/paocc-favors-total-ban-on-online-gambling-it-ruins-lives-of-families\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senator Sherwin Garchalian<\/a> filed a bill seeking to impose stricter regulations instead. This includes reducing online gambling\u2019s visibility in public events and advertisements, raising the minimum age of players from 18 to 21, as well as provisions to reduce access to betting sites and platforms in e-wallets such as GCash and PayMaya.<\/p>\n<p>GCash has recently stated that it <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/2082546\/gcash-restrictions-on-e-gambling-ads-start-today\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will update its advertising guidelines<\/a> to \u201cpromote safer gaming practices, and ensure that GCash and partner merchants remain compliant with the laws and regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is also entertaining the idea of limiting the use of digital payments in online gambling platforms.<\/p>\n<p>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/2082869\/joel-villanueva-calls-for-an-end-to-online-gambling-a-national-crisis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Villanueva calls for an end to online gambling: \u2018A national crisis\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Online gambling and low wages: More intertwined than you think<\/p>\n<p>The prevalence of digital and print media advertising online gambling; its integration to online and e-wallet platforms (making it highly accessible as well as gamified and attractive to minors); and addiction rooted in overlooked mental conditions\u2014these are undeniable factors that lead to widespread online gambling.<\/p>\n<p>But untangling it boils down to a \u2018simple\u2019 paradox: \u201cFinancial strain is often a consequence of gambling disorders. Wasn\u2019t it mostly reserved for the high-rollers in brick-and-mortar casinos?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Digitalization and ease of access have no doubt contributed to it, but that previous status quo\u2014of gambling being widely frowned upon\u2014no longer holds up in a world where working hard hasn\u2019t been enough in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>It is no secret that wages haven\u2019t exactly kept pace with rising prices, inflation, and growing needs. Single-income households are a thing of the past, and having multiple jobs has become increasingly normalized. And to add to that, online personalities streaming online gambling, \u201clucky\u201d people easily hitting jackpots left and right, and sports bettors making bank from a regular NBA game are proof that nowadays, working hard isn\u2019t rewarded.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019re surrounded by those who can earn in a day what takes many of us months or years to reach.<\/p>\n<p>There is a way up the financial ladder. Social mobility isn\u2019t dead yet, but solely working hard doesn\u2019t cut it anymore. You have to have multiple jobs. You need the right connections. You need to be tenacious, opportunistic, and sometimes lucky.
