Dennis Repp and Durrell Jackson, however, are lingering in a dayroom, waiting to be escorted to the solitary confinement unit where they work as custodians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"5\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpvnk000o3b7c8kttwxrk@published\">The work is brutally demoralizing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"71\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpvqs000p3b7cu0ofob2r@published\">\u201cFor starters, the incarcerated workers are forced to undergo strip searches before we begin our jobs,\u201d Repp, who has two years on the job, told me. \u201cThese strip searches consist of getting completely naked before a prison guard, revealing our hands, feet, opening our mouths, lifting our scrotums, and spreading our buttocks to give them a complete view of our anus, which never ceases to be a sickening experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"67\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpvwc000q3b7clpd9dj8b@published\">After the strip search, work crews put on bright-orange jumpsuits, and then load their carts with brooms, mops, spray bottles, and cleaning rags torn from old T-shirts and sweatpants. They wheel their carts through an electronic steel gate leading to a long hallway to begin sweeping, mopping, and wiping down recreational equipment that prisoners use during the one hour they\u2019re let out of their solitary confinement cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"19\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpw03000r3b7caz6u1seh@published\">Repp says that besides folding laundry, these are the least stressful tasks \u201cin an environment that is so unsettling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"74\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpw5c000s3b7c46op3h1d@published\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/solitarywatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SW-Fact-Sheet-3-Psychological-Effects-v221115.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing body of evidence<\/a> shows that solitary confinement causes extreme suffering and mental and physical breakdowns even in individuals with no history of psychiatric issues, with symptoms that include anxiety, depression, psychosis, self-harm, and suicide. For people with underlying mental illness, who are more likely than others to land in solitary, the effects are even more dire and deadly. Custodians in solitary confinement units confront these realities every time they go to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"52\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwaw000t3b7c772j3jy3@published\">\u201cWhen we first walk onto the tier,\u201d a hallway where prisoners are housed, \u201cwe\u2019re usually met with the scent of body odor, dirty clothes, and rotten fruit,\u201d Repp said. \u201cSometimes the strong stench of pepper spray lingers in the air from a prisoner being sprayed by a guard earlier in the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"41\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpweb000u3b7ckwewufjf@published\">\u201cOn numerous occasions, we would hear prisoners kicking their cell doors and screaming in the middle of the night, because they were either having a mental breakdown or prison guards were withholding basic necessities, like toilet paper, from them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"16\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwi0000v3b7cyubnanqv@published\">Repp talked about the emotional burden of working in a solitary confinement unit night after night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"44\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwlj000w3b7cuu5p756j@published\">\u201cIt\u2019s very disturbing to see human beings locked in concrete boxes for 23 hours a day,\u201d he said. \u201cMany of these people really need mental health assistance. But instead of getting proper help, they\u2019re being held in cages and treated like they\u2019re not people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"23\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwpe000x3b7c9otm6qls@published\">Jackson, who worked in solitary for two years, said that the condition of each cell is different, depending on the prisoner\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"61\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwt0000y3b7c85j6kz63@published\">\u201cSolitary cells that weren\u2019t occupied for long periods usually have an unmade bed and a brown paper bag plastered to the cell\u2019s overhead light with toothpaste,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cAlthough it\u2019s frustrating to scrape the paper and toothpaste off the light, I understand. Those lights are bright and never turn off, which can make it difficult for prisoners to sleep at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"30\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpwwg000z3b7c9j0d7t1r@published\">On the other hand, cells occupied for longer periods \u201cusually have piles of moldy food, swarms of bugs, and layers of dust on the floors, beds, and toilets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"21\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpx0200103b7cnm1g9r3f@published\">The work crews receive hazmat training to handle biohazards such as urine, feces, and other bloodborne pathogens, including HIV and hepatitis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"22\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpx3y00113b7cscfxgu41@published\">When mattresses are contaminated with biohazards, cleaning becomes difficult, Repp said, because fluids \u201cseep into the foam, where it can\u2019t be decontaminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"24\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpx7k00123b7c96txrpe7@published\">Repp said he told guards about the contaminated mattresses and was told to wipe them as much as possible so they could be reused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"64\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxb500133b7cy4sezfbu@published\">\u201cPrison guards would only dispose of a mattress when it was torn, not because it posed a health hazard, because they fear prisoners would hide contraband inside the ripped mattress,\u201d Repp said, \u201cbut sleeping on a contaminated mattress creates serious health risks. The mattress begins to mold, creating ammonia and causing long-term respiratory complications and even death when inhaled for long periods of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"62\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxes00143b7c31aiwge6@published\">Jackson further explained why the work can be so distressing. \u201cOne night I came to work and we had to clean a cell after a prisoner slit his wrist with a razor,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was blood all over the bed, floor, and hallway. Mentally processing that we\u2019re cleaning the remains of an attempted suicide was emotional and extremely hard to stomach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"91\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxjj00153b7c85h893co@published\">He continued: \u201cAnother prisoner, at least three times a week, would defecate in his hand, rub it all over the wall, smear it under the bed, and in between the doorjambs. Occasionally, he would urinate on the floor, which would leak outside the cell door and onto the tier, leaving the workers to clean it up. Despite the blood and body fluids that were in these cells, we weren\u2019t given the proper equipment to protect our eyes, face, head, or shoes, which was required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"37\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxmw00163b7cxage3chi@published\">Jackson added that whenever a solitary cell contained blood or body fluids, they were instructed to use a pressure washer, which was loud and would jar other prisoners from their sleep in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2026\/03\/supreme-court-analysis-sonia-sotomayor-trump-free-press.html\" class=\"recirc-line__content\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775219657_633_cc55436c-0a89-4793-af07-a4667014cd77.jpeg\" width=\"141\" height=\"94\"   alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n          Shirin Ali<br \/>\n        Sonia Sotomayor Just Issued a Stirring Defense of One of Trump\u2019s Biggest Targets<br \/>\n        Read More\n      <\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"56\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxqe00173b7cfb26qfsb@published\">\u201cOn multiple occasions, some of the workers would leave the job with specks of paint and feces on their skin and hair because they weren\u2019t provided proper protection while using the pressure washer to clean a cell,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cFor years, the protective equipment the custodians were provided didn\u2019t go beyond jumpsuits and ordinary rubber gloves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"19\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpxx300183b7cpo01gs9v@published\">Jackson eventually resigned from working in solitary after a prison guard forced him to work on his day off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"83\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpy0700193b7cqfhffwsu@published\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t mentally prepared to work the night they wanted me to work. Between being in prison and working in such a traumatizing environment, I needed time to manage my own mental health. That place will make you lose yourself,\u201d he said. \u201cBut rather than valuing my mental and emotional well-being, the guard threatened to give me a major infraction if I didn\u2019t show up to work, which is a policy violation that prisoners can receive for refusing to work a prison job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"44\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpy52001a3b7cr4m6b17a@published\">According to Washington Department of Corrections policy, such violations can result in individuals being locked in their cell for weeks, losing recreation and commissary privileges, or being transferred to another prison that might be hundreds of miles away from their families and support systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"22\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpybm001b3b7cv3xep53y@published\">Repp said that he quit after the prison administration tried to force work crews to clean blood and bodily fluids without compensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"68\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmngbpyf5001c3b7cko09fdtl@published\">At last count, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/solitarywatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Calculating-Torture-Report-May-2023-R2.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">122,000 people were in solitary confinement<\/a> in federal and state prisons and local jails across the United States. Washington utilizes solitary confinement at a rate lower than many states, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.wa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-02\/100-PL019.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pledged to reduce it further<\/a>.
