The Brooklyn Nets<\/a> are nearing the end of their 2025-26 NBA season and at this point, the team is hoping to win as many games as possible before breaking for the summer. Brooklyn has been trying to play its best basketball possible while battling injuries, but it seems like the Nets<\/a>‘ defense has been taking a hit during this rebuilding season.<\/p>\n

“They\u2019re 11-11 in games played between the bottom 10 teams in the league, with four more to come in the last two weeks,” John Schuhmann<\/a> wrote of the Nets during his weekly power rankings for NBA.com. Schuhmann kept Brooklyn ranked as the 28th-best team in the league heading into this week’s slate of games and that was before losing to the Charlotte Hornets 117-86<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“The Nets have allowed 3.2 more points per 100 possessions than the league average, making this their worst defensive season in the last 10 years,” Schuhmann continued while noting that Brooklyn’s defense has not been up to par this year. “They rank in the bottom three in both\u00a0opponent effective field goal percentage<\/a>\u00a0(56.7%) and\u00a0opponent free throw rate<\/a>\u00a0(29.4 attempts per 100 shots from the field.”<\/p>\n

While the Nets have ranked towards the bottom of the NBA in various advanced categories for the majority of the season, it has been evident that their defense has fallen by the wayside. In December<\/a>, the Nets compiled a 7-4 record due to their defensive improvement as they held their opponents to just 104.6 points per game on 44.8% shooting from the field and 32.8% from behind the three-point line.<\/p>\n

Schuhmann notes later in his section about the Nets that head coach Jordi Fernandez has been employing an aggressive defensive strategy that forces turnovers, but has also left Brooklyn susceptible to giving up plenty of points in the paint. Heading into Friday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, Fernandez and the coaching staff will have to hope that the aggressive defensive scheme can work against All-Star forward Jalen Johnson and company.<\/p>\n
