When the Eagles broke up, there was no real road map for where Glenn Frey<\/a> was going to go next.\u00a0<\/p>\n As far as he was concerned, he had reached the heights that he had wanted to reach with the band, and everything else seemed to be nothing but diminishing returns if he was going to try for a solo career. Then again, if he could do whatever he wanted with his solo material, he was bound to have a lot more fun when he didn\u2019t have to worry about everything sounding perfect like he used to be whenever the band harmonised together. <\/p>\n But when you look at the kind of songs that Frey was working with at the time, it\u2019s not like he was making music that sounded like Eagles. No Fun Aloud was a breezy rock and roll album that seemed like a breath of fresh air, but \u2018The Heat Is On\u2019 was the kind of tune that was a monster that no one could have tamed. And that also applied to Frey as well when he was first presented with the song.<\/p>\n The tune isn\u2019t exactly in line with his country-rock schtick, and there were far more people that could have had the chance to work on it other than him, but he didn\u2019t want to waste the opportunity, either. Beverly Hills Cop was going to be one of the biggest comedy films of the decade<\/a>, and if he was invited to see a screening of the movie, the least he could do was throw in his own performance of the tune to see what he could do with it.<\/p>\n In no way did he think he was going to be able to do it justice like someone like Stevie Wonder could, but Frey did manage to get the right muscle behind the tune once he got permission to perform it, saying<\/a>, \u201cI went to the screening and there was Quincy Jones, Richard Perry, the Pointer Sisters, and Stevie Wonder, and it\u2019s an Eddie Murphy movie. I enjoyed the film, but I said, \u2018They don\u2019t have any use for the king of country rock in this film.\u2019 So I left the screening thinking that I wouldn\u2019t be doing anything for the movie. Lo and behold, three weeks later, I got a demo of the song and they want me to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n At the same time, there was never any chance that Frey was going to suddenly become the same kind of pop star that he was when he first started with Eagles. He had to be coming from an entirely different place, but if there was any genre that he knew from his youth better than anything else, it was the sounds of Motown that he had heard in Detroit years before he had become one of the darlings of country music.<\/p>\n Smokey Robinson and the Miracles were among the biggest names in music when he was first coming up, and while there were more than a few times where he seemed to be out of his depth and gave the R&B songs away to Don Henley or Timothy B Schmit to sing, he was a natural when it came time for him to start working on his shout. He was working with the same kind of template that he used on \u2018Heartache Tonight\u2019<\/a>, and he could churn out tunes just as well as any of his contemporaries could.<\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t exactly country, but it wasn\u2019t too far away from what he was originally doing, either. Many of the best songs could have a bit more of a groove to them once they got the twang off of them, and there are more than a few times during the 1970s where he could have flirted with a bit more than country, especially when he started off the initial groove of a song like \u2018One of These Nights\u2019.<\/p>\n And since Frey singled out songs like that as some of the high points for Eagles, they were practically setting the stage for what his solo career was going to look like. Anyone could have made tunes that were nothing but heartland rock for the rest of their lives, but Frey loved the idea of trying new things, and those may as well have been the first steps towards finding his own voice apart from his high-flying friends.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
