A surfer is counting his blessings after frightening footage revealed a hammerhead shark lurking under the surface as he caught a wave in Hawaii.<\/p>\n
Matt Reynolds, 56, was filming himself riding waves off of Honolulu earlier this year when he spotted a dark shadow beneath him \u2014 and immediately identified the apex predator by its distinctive-head shape.<\/p>\n
Viral video of the close encounter ends with a close-up on Reynolds\u2019 shocked expression immediately after he passed over the fish, just feet away from his board.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I was finishing up this particular wave, I was startled by a large shadow below me and I immediately knew it was a hammerhead shark as the water was so clear,\u201d Reynolds from O\u2018ahu, told creatorzine.com<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI tried my hardest to not panic so I wouldn\u2019t fall,\u201d the spooked surfer said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a scary moment as I haven\u2019t seen one this big.\u201d<\/p>\n Renyolds\u2019 jaw dropped after he realized what he had narrowly missed. Jam Press\/@mattreyn0lds<\/p>\n The clip was filmed in January when Reynolds and his buddies were foil surfing near Honolulu. Despite the 10-foot waves that made for an exciting morning, they decided to pack up after the shark sighting.<\/p>\n \u201cI have seen large marine life many times, whales, turtles, sharks\u2026 but this is my first time capturing a shark with such clarity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n While most hammerhead shark species are fairly small, the Great Hammerhead can grow up to 20 feet in length and is a skilled and vicious predator, according to National Geographic<\/a>.<\/p>\n![\"Renyolds\u2019](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9750ce22e13723c3c0b0323ba0ae3905.jpeg\"\/)
