WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The city of Watertown is trying to make par, but the future of the Thompson Park Golf Course is in the rough.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember coming in and I made the comment, \u2018We own the golf course, we\u2019re going to make it work.\u2019 We\u2019ve tried to do that and unfortunately, with the cost of doing business and the cost of salaries, it\u2019s been very difficult to make it work,\u201d said Eric Eric Wagenaar, city manager.<\/p>\n
At a budget session on Tuesday, a majority of lawmakers informally agreed that keeping the golf course open isn\u2019t sustainable.<\/p>\n
The proposed budget for the coming year calls for funding the course through October and not reopening next Spring.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hate to say it, but I think it\u2019s almost inevitable,\u201d said city council member Doug Osborne.<\/p>\n
For the past three years the city has run the golf course, it has lost money. Most recently it lost about $100,000 for the 2025 season.<\/p>\n
Lawmakers mentioned Tuesday night leasing it out may be the next best option, and DJ Marconi was listening.<\/p>\n
Marconi currently leases and operates the golf course\u2019s restaurant, \u201cDJ\u2019s at the Park.\u201d Now, he\u2019s submitted a proposal to partner with the city and lease out the golf course too.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve put together a strong business plan over the last two months and I\u2019m excited for the opportunity to discuss those issues with the city and come up with a solution that is beneficial to my business, the city of Watertown, and the taxpayers,\u201d Marconi said.<\/p>\n
City Manager Eric Wagenaar said city council may decide to put out requests for proposal to see if others are interested. He says there would be a few options to talk through in terms of the lease, but the goal is to ensure there is no additional burden on taxpayers. <\/p>\n
