Image Credit: Cavan Images\/Getty Images<br \/>This article originally appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/higher-blood-pressure-heart-kidney-disease-risk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Healthline;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Healthline<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Research shows that young adults with high blood pressure may face a higher risk of cardiovascular and kidney disease later in life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The findings highlight the importance of maintaining healthy blood pressure at a younger age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend treating hypertension in adults with a predicted 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>High blood pressure during young adulthood may be linked to a higher risk of heart disease and kidney disease later in life, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p>The findings reinforced the importance of maintaining a healthy blood pressure at younger ages, particularly among adults under 40.<\/p>\n<p>This study hasn\u2019t yet been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, but the researchers recently presented their findings at the <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.heart.org\/en\/meetings\/epi-lifestyle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:American Heart Association (AHA)\u2019s EPI|Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2026;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">American Heart Association (AHA)\u2019s EPI|Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh blood pressure is a known significant risk factor for developing both heart disease and kidney disease,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/cheng-han-chen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cheng-Han Chen;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cheng-Han Chen<\/a>, MD, board certified interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is thus unsurprising, although still concerning, that long periods of elevated blood pressure in young adulthood would lead to premature cardiovascular and kidney events in middle age,\u201d Chen told Healthline.<\/p>\n<p>High blood pressure raises heart disease risk by 27%<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of U.S. adults live with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/high-blood-pressure-hypertension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:high blood pressure (hypertension);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">high blood pressure (hypertension)<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.heart.org\/en\/science-news\/-\/media\/BC342ED991C24EE38C7DF485238BF0D4.ashx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:AHA 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">AHA 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hypertension is the <a href=\"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/what-we-do\/hypertension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:leading cause;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">leading cause<\/a> of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>High blood pressure is also the most common and modifiable risk factor for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/heart-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:heart disease;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">heart disease<\/a> and stroke. This means that maintaining a healthy blood pressure is imperative to reducing the risk of or preventing heart disease, a major cardiac event, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/stroke\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:stroke;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">stroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften we ignore elevated blood pressures in young adults, thinking that we\u2019ll just watch it,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/manhattancardiology.com\/team\/karishma-patwa-md\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Karishma Patwa;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Karishma Patwa<\/a>, MD, board certified cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology in NYC, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new data is reinforcing that screening and management should begin much earlier than midlife,\u201d Patwa told Healthline.<\/p>\n<p>The recent study analyzed health information of 291,887 adults from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database.<\/p>\n<p>Each participant was 30 years old between 2002 and 2004, and received routine health screenings between the ages of 30 and 40.<\/p>\n<p>The participants had no prior history of either heart disease or kidney disease before the age of 40.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers calculated each participant\u2019s cumulative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/blood-pressure-chart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:blood pressure levels;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">blood pressure levels<\/a> from ages 30 to 40 to account for how high it was and how long it stayed elevated.<\/p>\n<p>The participants were followed for about 10 years after age 40. During this period, the development of heart or kidney disease was identified through national health service records. The diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/chronic-kidney-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:chronic kidney disease;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">chronic kidney disease<\/a> was also confirmed by laboratory tests, conducted during the follow-up period.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that those who had high blood pressure that remained elevated from age 30 to 40 had a higher risk of heart disease and kidney disease after 40.<\/p>\n<p>Those who had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/diastole-vs-systole\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:systolic (top number);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">systolic (top number)<\/a> blood pressure reading of around 10 mm Hg higher than their peers for about 10 years had a 27% higher risk of heart disease and a 22% higher risk of kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>Participants who had a diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) of around 5 mm Hg higher than their peers for about 10 years had a 20% higher risk of heart disease and 16% higher risk of kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000001356?utm_campaign=sciencenews25-26&amp;utm_source=science-news&amp;utm_medium=phd-link&amp;utm_content=phd-08-14-25\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:AHA 2025 High Blood Pressure Guideline;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">AHA 2025 High Blood Pressure Guideline<\/a> recommends treating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/types-and-stages-of-hypertension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:stage 1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">stage 1<\/a> hypertension (after 3 to 6 months of lifestyle modification) in adults with a low predicted 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree with these recommendations. 10-year cardiovascular risk predictors are limiting, especially in younger patients. I would, however, individualize my approach for each patient and look at their overall lifetime risk trajectory prior to starting medications,\u201d said Patwa.<\/p>\n<p>Tips to lower your blood pressure<\/p>\n<p>The AHA states that it\u2019s important to work with your healthcare professional to manage and lower your blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Your doctor may prescribe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/high-blood-pressure-hypertension-medication\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:blood pressure medications;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">blood pressure medications<\/a> or recommend strategies for managing high blood sugar and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/high-cholesterol\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:high cholesterol;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">high cholesterol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can help prevent a cardiovascular event.
