{"id":566839,"date":"2026-04-05T23:28:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T23:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/566839\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T23:28:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T23:28:10","slug":"a-special-protein-in-your-gut-has-the-power-to-neutralize-bacteria-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/566839\/","title":{"rendered":"A Special Protein in Your Gut Has The Power to Neutralize Bacteria : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have discovered that a particular protein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-human-digestive-system-varies-way-more-than-we-realize\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the gut<\/a> is fighting an important battle against the spread of bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Through a combination of protective effects, the protein could in the future be used in treatments for conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-crucial-genetic-mutation-behind-crohns-disease-has-finally-been-revealed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflammatory bowel disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The protein, intelectin-2, isn&#8217;t new to scientists, but its role in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract hasn&#8217;t been clear. Intelectin-2 is part of a group of proteins called lectins, which work by binding to specific sugar molecules.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by researchers at MIT has now found that intelectin-2 works in two ways: First, it links mucus molecules lining the GI tract, strengthening the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-finally-created-realistic-synthetic-mucus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mucus barrier<\/a> that protects intestinal tissues.<\/p>\n<p>But if there&#8217;s a breach, intelectin-2 also recognizes and traps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/couples-share-a-surprising-percentage-of-gut-bacteria-that-may-impact-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a variety of bacterial cells<\/a>, either inhibiting their growth or killing them off completely.<\/p>\n<p>So intelectin-2&#8217;s role is a combination of defense and offense activities that protect bodily health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s remarkable is that intelectin-2 operates in two complementary ways,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2026\/protein-found-gi-tract-can-neutralize-many-bacteria-0113\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> MIT chemist Laura Kiessling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It helps stabilize the mucus layer, and if that barrier is compromised, it can directly neutralize or restrain bacteria that begin to escape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used a combination of techniques to look at the activity of intelectin-2. They studied mouse tissue, gut bacteria from mice and humans, and both the human and mouse versions of the protein isolated in the lab.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ProteinEffects.jpg\" alt=\"Protein effects\" width=\"642\" height=\"397\" class=\"wp-image-196458 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Intelectin-2 can protect the mucus barrier in healthy tissue (left) and fight bacteria in the inflamed gut (right). Comm., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>These approaches revealed that intelectin-2 targets <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galactose\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galactose<\/a>, a simple sugar found in mucus molecules and in the carbohydrates that cover the surface of some bacterial cells (including bacteria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/is-it-gastro-or-food-poisoning-heres-a-guide-to-your-upset-stomach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">linked to GI infections<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In scenarios where intelectin-2 binds to and traps microbes, the bacteria seem to break down over time, possibly because the protein disrupts their outer membrane.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, some of the bacteria that intelectin-2 neutralizes have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ancient-killer-is-rapidly-becoming-resistant-to-antibiotics-scientists-warn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">developed antibiotic resistance<\/a> to varying degrees, making these discoveries even more valuable in terms of drug development.<\/p>\n<p>Those bacteria include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-pinpoint-how-deadly-superbug-hides-out-in-human-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Staphylococcus aureus<\/a>, which can trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/radical-new-therapy-could-rapidly-reverse-sepsis-in-the-brain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sepsis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/klebsiella-pneumoniae-hypervirulent-strain-biomarker-test\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/a>, which causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brushing-teeth-appears-to-protect-against-pneumonia-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pneumonia<\/a> and other infections.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Intelectin-2 first reinforces the mucus barrier itself, and then if that barrier is breached, it can control the bacteria and restrict their growth,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2026\/protein-found-gi-tract-can-neutralize-many-bacteria-0113\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Kiessling.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists estimate that more than 200 lectins are encoded in the human genome, so the work continues to understand how they influence cell-to-cell communication and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-may-have-discovered-a-way-to-rejuvenate-the-immune-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immune function<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before this study of intelectin-2, researchers had <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-021-92198-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously linked intelectin-1<\/a> in the gut to Crohn&#8217;s disease. So it seems these proteins have crucial parts to play in protecting gut health.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also point out that intelectin-2 levels are often found at unusually low or high levels in people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/killer-t-cells-gone-rogue-may-be-a-main-culprit-of-inflammatory-bowel-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflammatory bowel disease<\/a>. Based on this new study, that may indicate the mucus barrier isn&#8217;t being patched up well enough, or that healthy bacteria are being killed off.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/microbe-in-human-gut-may-boost-muscle-strength-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microbe in Human Gut May Boost Muscle Strength, Study Finds<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both the offense and defense aspects of intelectin-2&#8217;s operations might be useful in the future, either through the development of drugs that mimic some of the actions the protein takes, or by boosting the protein&#8217;s own capabilities in the body.<\/p>\n<p>These lectins are ancient animal proteins, believed to predate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-immune-system-weighs-the-same-as-a-pineapple-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more advanced immune systems<\/a> working in our bodies today.
