HBO\u2019s upcoming \u201cHarry Potter\u201d TV series<\/a> has attracted plenty of negative attention since it was announced in 2023. This weekend, \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d addressed one of the more consistently discussed problems with the new series: that the only prominent Black character is also considered evil for much of the series.<\/p>\n

Paapa Essiedu\u2019s casting as Professor Severus Snape has been equally celebrated and derided, and even those who support the casting have expressed concern about how the character will be portrayed and received. Essideu himself addressed some of the racist comments and death threats<\/a> he\u2019s received in March.<\/p>\n

Kam Patterson portrayed \u201cBlack Snape\u201d last night on \u201cSNL\u2019s\u201d Weekend Update,\u201d and he first acknowledged host Colin Jost with a faux British accent before he said, \u201cNah, I\u2019m playing. I don\u2019t talk like that, bro. It\u2019s called code-switching.\u00a0Codio switchio!\u201d<\/p>\n

After Jost asked how things were at Hogwarts, Patterson answered, \u201cNot great. We got this new kid. His name is Harry Potter, and he\u2019s racist as hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cHarry Potter \u2014 or, the\u00a0Proud\u00a0Boy Who Lived \u2014 spent the whole year telling everybody that the school\u2019s only Black teacher was secretly evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jost defended Potter and noted, \u201cI think he\u2019s just worried because he knows someone\u2019s trying to steal the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo. Somebody stole something\u2026\u201d Patterson slowly answered before he added, \u201c\u2026And the number-one suspect is Black Snape?\u201d<\/p>\n

Patterson also pointed out that Snape teaches the Dark Arts, and said, \u201cThe whole Wizarding World is racist. There\u2019s\u00a0one\u00a0other Black guy, Kingsley Shacklebolt, a name I\u2019m guessing they got out of the Wu-Tang name generator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jost concluded, \u201cWell, for the very first time I\u2019m starting to think\u00a0J.K. Rowling\u00a0might be\u00a0problematic\u201d \u2014 a pointed reference to the author\u2019s many political controversies in recent years.<\/p>\n

Patterson-as-Snape wasn\u2019t quite finished with things. Before the segment closed out, he faced the camera and said, \u201cI do have one final thing I\u2019d like to say to Harry Potter\u2026 Boy, your mama was thick as hell, dog. I miss her so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
