WASHINGTON, April 6 (Reuters) – The war in the Middle East will lead \u200cto higher inflation and slower global growth, \u200cthe head of the International Monetary Fund told Reuters on \u200bMonday, ahead of a fresh forecast for the world economy planned by the global lender for next week.<\/p>\n

Barring the war, the IMF had expected a \u200csmall upgrade in \u2060its projection for global growth of 3.3% in 2026 and 3.2% in 2027.<\/p>\n

“Had \u2060we not had this war we would have seen a small upgrade of our growth projections. Instead, \u200ball roads \u200bnow lead to \u200bhigher prices and slower \u200cgrowth,” said Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF.<\/p>\n

Even a rapid end to hostilities and a fairly rapid recovery would result in a “relatively small” downward revision of the growth forecast and an \u200cupward revision of its inflation \u200bforecast, she said. If the \u200bwar was protracted, \u200bthe effect on inflation and growth \u200cwould be greater, she said.<\/p>\n

Georgieva \u200bsaid the \u200bIMF had received requests for financing assistance from some countries, but did not name them. \u200bShe said the \u200cIMF could augment some existing lending programs \u200bto meet countries’ needs.<\/p>\n
