\u201cThe View\u201d<\/a>\u00a0co-host Sara Haines said Wednesday that criticism of her earlier comments on marriage and motherhood had been \u201cmisconstrued,\u201d responding to backlash tied to remarks made by Isabel Brown encouraging Gen Z women to prioritize marriage and having children.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy ultimate beef with this is that it wraps a woman\u2019s worth up in her ovaries,\u201d Haines said on the\u00a0\u201cBehind the Table\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cMarriage, children, it\u2019s a choice \u2026 The world has over 8 billion people. We no longer need to force people to procreate and pump out babies. We have arrived here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The discussion came after the segment on the daytime talk show drew criticism online, particularly from Brown, who argued Haines\u2019 remarks dismissed\u00a0traditional family values.<\/p>\n

Haines said her intent was not to discourage\u00a0marriage or motherhood,<\/a> but to address what she described as societal pressure placed on women.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy issue was with the greater message,\u201d Haines said. \u201cI love babies. I love being married. I love all those things. But there\u2019s so much pressure in this world on women to define themselves by if they\u2019re married and if they have babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said her perspective was informed by her own life experiences and those of women around her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy take comes from a place of empathy and life lived,\u201d Haines said. \u201cKnowing so many women, having been single, like dating for years and not knowing if I was going to find my person to get married.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haines said she believed the expectation that women can easily marry and have children does not reflect reality for many.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey make it sound like this easy choice. Get married, have kids,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are so many amazing women I know that aren\u2019t meeting people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also pointed to challenges surrounding fertility and alternative paths to parenthood.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSo many people I know have struggled for some reason having babies,\u201d Haines said. \u201cWhether it was fertility \u2014 I\u2019m friends with a lot of gay couples that have had to fight non-traditional surrogates, all these things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haines said conversations about women frequently center on marital status and children.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask women all the time about marriage and kids and that seems to be all they\u2019re worth,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beauty of progress in time is that we don\u2019t have to put that on people\u2019s shoulders \u2026 You do what you can and what you want because you have a life beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haines said she believed her comments had been taken out of context by some conservative figures.<\/p>\n

\u201cI refuse to read it because right when I saw some of the headlines, I thought, here we go again,\u201d Haines replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cConservative influencers have kind of misconstrued what you guys were saying on the show and what the point of it is,\u201d podcast host and \u201cThe View\u201d<\/a> executive producer Brian Teta said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely think she misconstrued \u2014 whether that was willful or ignorance, she\u2019s missing my whole point,\u201d Haines said, referring to Brown.<\/p>\n

Haines reiterated that her comments were meant to affirm women regardless of their life circumstances.<\/p>\n
