\n\tMeryl Streep<\/a> graces the cover of Vogue magazine<\/a> alongside Anna Wintour ahead of the release of \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a>,\u201d which finds Streep reprising her Oscar-nominated role of fashion magazine boss Miranda Priestly. During their chat, moderated by Greta Gerwig, Wintour brought up Melania Trump<\/a>, which prompted Streep to call out the first lady.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think the most\u2026 powerful message that our current first lady sent was in the coat that said \u2018I Really Don\u2019t Care, Do U?\u2019 when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated,\u201d Streep said of Melania Trump\u2019s controversial outfit worn in June 2018. \u201cAll dress is about expressing yourself, but we\u2019re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump later tried to explain the coat, telling ABC that it \u201cwas a kind of message, yes\u201d but \u201cit\u2019s obvious I didn\u2019t wear the jacket for the children, I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane. It was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me. I want to show them I don\u2019t care. You could criticize whatever you want to say. But it will not stop me to do what I feel is right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStreep pivoted from Trump to talking about female fashion at large, saying: \u201cI\u2019m stunned at how women in power have to have bare arms on television while men are covered in shirts and ties or a suit. There\u2019s an apology built into women. They have to show their smallness. It\u2019s compensatory: The advancements of women in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of this one have been destabilizing. It\u2019s as if women have to say, \u2018I\u2019m little. I can\u2019t walk in these shoes. I can\u2019t run. I\u2019m bare, not threatening.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d finds Miranda Priestly navigating the turbulent modern news media, with her print magazine having to keep up the times. That\u2019s where the magazine\u2019s new features editor comes in, who just happens to be Priestly\u2019s former assistant (Anne Hathaway\u2019s Andy Sachs). <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was interested in the business part of it, that thing of carrying the weight of many, many people\u2019s jobs, running a big organization, keeping it going somehow,\u201d Streep said. \u201cWith this one, I thought, \u2018Well, where are they going to go?\u2019 Now that everything\u2019s disintegrating, now that these institutions are being undermined or exploded in a way that who knows what is happening in the world right now\u2014I wondered what they were going to do. And I do think they\u2019ve located something true about the business now.<\/p>\n
