{"id":571366,"date":"2026-04-08T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T08:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/571366\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T08:00:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T08:00:25","slug":"under-governor-gavin-newsom-californias-4-trillion-economy-outpaces-major-nations-report-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/571366\/","title":{"rendered":"Under Governor Gavin Newsom, California\u2019s $4 Trillion Economy Outpaces Major Nations, Report Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California\u2019s economy has established itself as a global powerhouse during Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s tenure, with new data highlighting the state\u2019s influence on the nation\u2019s economic growth and financial markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Citing data from a recent Bloomberg News report, the governor\u2019s office said in a statement that California\u2019s economy has continued to flourish despite President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cfailed economic policies and sustained attacks\u201d from a section of the media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, California has emerged as the leading-performing economy among all 50 states, even outperforming some developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>Calling Governor Newsom an \u201ceconomic maestro,\u201d the report said that California (with a population of 39 million) surpassed Japan (population 123 million) as the fourth-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p>A $4 Trillion Economy<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2026\/04\/06\/icymi-bloomberg-news-how-californias-economy-dominates-in-the-gavin-newsom-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Governor Newsom was sworn<\/a> in as the governor in January 2019, California\u2019s GDP surged 40% to over $4 trillion, according to Bloomberg. This accounts for more than 14% of the total national output.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s GDP growth also outpaced major economies, including China (32%) and Germany (16%).<\/p>\n<p>Despite being home to less than 12% of the nation\u2019s population, California accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2026-04-06\/california-s-economic-boom-proves-gavin-newsom-s-critics-wrong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more than 40% of the growth<\/a> in the value of the country\u2019s publicly traded equities.<\/p>\n<p>Companies based in California are thriving, another marker of economic growth. Firms in the state spent $527 billion annually on acquisitions during Governor Newsom\u2019s tenure, almost three times the $179 billion spent annually in the 20 years before he took office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>California Becomes Fourth Largest Economy<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s global economic standing was cemented by data which revealed that the state ranked among some of the biggest global economies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Governor Newsom announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/04\/23\/california-is-now-the-4th-largest-economy-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">April 2025<\/a> that California\u2019s GDP placed it fourth in global rankings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, California was the only state to feature ranking, which includes major countries. In 2024, California\u2019s growth rate was 6%, placing the state fourth and behind the U.S., China, and Germany in the global rankings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A driver of the nation\u2019s economic growth, the statement said California sends over $83 billion more to the federal government than it receives in federal funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s Growth Trajectory<\/p>\n<p>Across the country, California\u2019s GDP grew at a 4.5% annualized rate, representing the state\u2019s fastest growth since the second quarter of 2023,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2026\/02\/04\/californias-4-5-economic-growth-was-middling-in-third-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Orange County Register<\/a> reported citing the third quarter report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
