Positioned\u00a0halfway\u00a0between Phoenix and Tucson along Highway\u00a010, its impressive peak is easy to spot as you\u2019re driving.\u00a0Especially during the spring bloom when the hillside is covered in vibrant yellow California poppies and purple lupins.\u00a0<\/p>\n Spring in Arizona arrives earlier than in other parts of the country. Visitors can expect spring-like weather between February and March, making it the perfect time to go hiking. Summiting Picacho\u2019s 1,500-foot peak via the Hunter Trail or Sunset Vista Trail during Arizona\u2019s intense heat from April through summer is inadvisable.<\/p>\n \u201cThe peak can be intimidating to novice hikers. It uses a series of cables, and you want to come well prepared with gloves, sun protection, water, and snacks,\u201d explains\u00a0Elisabeth Haugan, communications manager for\u00a0Arizona State Parks and Trails<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cFor a more leisure hike, the nature trail is a half-mile loop with interpretive signs to learn about the native animals and plants you\u2019ll see,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n (Nevada\u2019s state parks shine even brighter than the Strip<\/a>.)<\/p>\n 2.\u00a0Anza Borrego\u00a0Desert State\u00a0Park, California<\/p>\n Anza-Borrego Desert\u00a0State Park is one of Southern California\u2019s hidden gems. It\u2019s the largest state park in California<\/a> in the western Colorado Desert, just east of San Diego<\/a> and south of Palm Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s approximately 650,000 acres, just about the size of Delaware<\/a>,\u201d says Dan McCamish, the senior environmental scientist for California State Parks. Its sprawling boundaries mean there is something for everyone, including backcountry exploring, horseback riding, camping, stargazing, hiking, and natural hot springs.<\/p>\n \u201cThe weather in the Anza Borrego region is pretty heavenly October through March, but\u00a0our winter annual flowers begin to pop up mid-February into March,\u201d\u00a0says McCamish. People flock from all over to admire the spring blooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n 3. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve, California<\/p>\n Another California state park that blooms to life in spring is the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve. Located about two hours north of Los Angeles, it\u2019s the perfect place for a day trip to see miles and miles of stunning poppy flowers.\u00a0<\/p>\n The State Natural Reserve is California\u2019s most persistent poppy-bearing land,\u00a0which\u00a0means\u00a0each spring,\u00a0you are virtually guaranteed to have a colorful show. The poppies are usually most vibrant between late March\u00a0and\u00a0late April, but it\u2019s best to check the\u00a0live poppy cam<\/a>\u00a0provided by the state park to ensure it\u2019s ideal viewing before driving out there.\u00a0<\/p>\n (Eight underrated state parks that deliver the awe without the crowds<\/a>.)<\/p>\n 4. Big Bend Ranch State Park, Texas Go stargazing at Big Bend Ranch State Park in Texas, where visitors can see the Rio Grande below and prominent constellations, including the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, Orion, Taurus, and Cassiopeia.<\/p>\n Tamir Kalifa, The New York Times\/Redux<\/p>\n Big Bend Ranch State Park is roughly three and\u00a0a\u00a0half hours west of\u00a0Big Bend National Park<\/a>,\u00a0along the border of Mexico and the United States.\u00a0\u201cThe weather attracts a lot of people in\u00a0the\u00a0spring, but the wildflowers also bring people here to see the desert come to life with color,\u201d\u00a0says Aaron Garza, the public relations representative\u00a0for Visit Big Bend.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cLate February is when the wildflowers bloom, but it can last through April or even May,\u00a0depending on how much rain we received\u00a0that year,\u201d\u00a0adds Garza.\u00a0Big Bend Ranch State Park<\/a>\u00a0is massive,\u00a0\u201call other Texas<\/a> state parks\u00a0could fit\u00a0within its boundaries,\u201d\u00a0explains Garza.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mountain biking, birding, hiking,\u00a0and paddling on the Rio Grande\u00a0are some of the top activities to do here. But if you visit in spring,\u00a0keep an eye out for bluebonnets, gorgeous red flowers on the wiry ocotillo cactus,\u00a0and hummingbirds buzzing around the tall stocks shooting up from the century agave plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n 5.\u00a0Cummins Falls State Park, Tennessee<\/p>\n Located about a two-hour\u00a0drive from Nashville<\/a>, Cummins Falls State Park is\u00a0home\u00a0to\u00a0one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tennessee<\/a>,\u00a0and the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day. But what makes spring the favorable time to visit is the intensity of the waterfall from winter snowmelt.\u00a0<\/p>\n Water rushes over the cliff\u2019s edge at a ferocity you won\u2019t see later on in the year. If you visit in May, it\u2019s often warm enough to want to go for a dip. Not to mention having fewer crowds in spring gives you a better chance of securing a\u00a0Gorge Access permit<\/a>,\u00a0which is required to access the base of the falls. The park issues 200 permits a day,\u00a0which can be purchased in advance and require\u00a0a one-\u00a0to\u00a01.5-mile out-and-back hike into the gorge.<\/p>\n 6. Grandfather Mountain\u00a0State\u00a0Park,\u00a0North Carolina A walk across the 228-foot Swinging Bridge provides outdoor enthusiasts with panoramic views of Grandfather Mountain as well as the valley below at Grandfather Mountain State Park in Tennessee.<\/p>\n mauritius images GmbH, Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n Spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains is spectacular. The weather is mild and picturesque for hiking,\u00a0and there are over 100 wildflower species. One of the best state parks to enjoy the magic of spring here is Grandfather Mountain State Park, which spans three counties in North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n Wildflowers pop up in mid-April as the area\u00a0sees more rain. Blooms typically last until late May,\u00a0just before the area warms up,\u00a0says\u00a0Amelia Gallina, a park ranger at\u00a0Grandfather\u00a0Mountain State Park. “One of my favorite hikes is the\u00a0Nuwati Trail<\/a>. It\u2019s a pretty mild trail, 1.2 miles out and 2 miles back. There\u00a0are\u00a0no ladders or cables like with other trails in\u00a0Grandfather Mountain, so it\u2019s one most people can do,\u201d\u00a0she explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n 7. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Texas<\/p>\n Just outside of Austin<\/a> in the heart of Texas Hill Country is Enchanted Rock State Park.\u00a0Loved by locals<\/a>, this state park is a fantastic spot\u00a0for\u00a0hiking, admiring wildflowers,\u00a0and basking\u00a0in a dark sky before the brutal summer heat arrives.<\/p>\n Rock climbing and hiking are the most popular activities here.
