One season ago, the Phoenix Mercury traded for Satou Sabally<\/a>. But her time in the Valley of the Sun is coming to an end. She posted<\/a> on her personal Instagram account this response: \u201cMy best year yet. Thank you, Phoenix.\u201d<\/p>\n

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, but not entirely so. The Mercury didn’t designate a core extension for her, and she was reported to move on, according to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.<\/p>\n

With so many roster decisions on the table, Sabally’s potential return was a major question mark. They still have Kahleah Copper, Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Sami Whitcomb, who are all unrestricted free agents.<\/p>\n

After making the WNBA Finals last season, many thought they would run it back. Safe to say that won’t be the case. There are some other options for her, as other teams will throw the house at her in an attempt to make her the franchise player.<\/p>\n

Why did Satou Sabally leave the Mercury?<\/p>\n

As of writing this, the information isn’t necessarily definitive, but there are some factors. One of which could be how the medical staff treated her concussion in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals.<\/p>\n

She had lingering symptoms that forced Sabally to miss the entire season<\/a> of Unrivaled. However, a majority of it likely relates to not being the primary option.<\/p>\n

Both Copper and Thomas are the respective options, and it forced Sabally to take a backseat. Not to mention, she’s only 27 and seems to scratch the surface of her potential.<\/p>\n

Also, her sister, Nyara, is with the Toronto Tempo. As an expansion team, they’re looking for that primary option<\/a>, and Satou can fit the mold.<\/p>\n

No one will know until more information comes out, but for now, the Mercury will pivot and reload for another Finals run.<\/p>\n
