{"id":572411,"date":"2026-04-08T19:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T19:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/572411\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T19:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T19:55:09","slug":"sue-bird-to-serve-as-an-nbc-studio-analyst-for-wnba-broadcasts-this-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/572411\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue Bird to serve as an NBC studio analyst for WNBA broadcasts this season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">NEW YORK \u2013 Hall of Famer Sue Bird watched the W <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/wnba-basketball\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA on NBC<\/a> growing up and now she&#8217;ll be part of the network&#8217;s broadcasts of the league.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The four-time WNBA champion will be a studio analyst and also host a series of feature stories on NBC and Peacock throughout the league&#8217;s 30th season which begins on May 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ve been circling broadcasting for a long time now,\u201d Bird told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday. \u201cGiven NBC\u2019s history and legacy and where the WNBA is now, I am excited to be part of it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">&#8220;It needed to be the right fit, the right people, the right network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The NBC broadcasts will also feature a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nbc-nba-roundball-rock-f3b0a4ef3e9befa8cbf027c433370736\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">version of \u201cRoundball Rock\u201d<\/a> \u2014 John Tesh\u2019s iconic theme song that was the soundtrack of the network\u2019s coverage of the WNBA from 1997 until 2002. It had been used on NBA broadcasts on the network from 1990-2002 before being brought back this year when NBC took over broadcasting games again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">NBC Sports has more than 20 games across the regular season, playoffs and WNBA Finals this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAnytime anyone hears it, whether you&#8217;re a basketball fan or not, it&#8217;s really recognizable,\u201d Bird said. \u201cTurn the TV on as a spectator or fan on the couch, if that\u2019s the first thing you hear there\u2019s an excitement that comes with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bird\u2019s rookie season in Seattle in 2002 was NBC\u2019s last with the WNBA until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere is no more accomplished player in the history of the WNBA and arguably in all of women\u2019s sports than Sue Bird,\u201d said Betsy Riley, Senior Vice President and WNBA Coordinating Producer of NBC Sports. \u201cSue\u2019s knowledge of the game is unmatched and will bring fans closer to the sport they love, both through analysis and storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Portions of Bird&#8217;s features, which will be a behind-the-scenes- look at the league that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, will air on TV with the extended versions available digitally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bird has hosted podcasts for the past few years and also was on ESPN for six years providing an alt-cast with Diana Taurasi for the women&#8217;s Final Four and championship games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI really enjoy telling stories as it\u2019s something that comes naturally to me,\u201d Bird said. \u201cI cut my teeth on the podcasts I\u2019m involved in \u2014 \u2018Bird\u2019s Eye View.\u2019 My goal was to tell the stories of these players. Those are the features I\u2019m doing with NBC as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bird won four WNBA championships in Seattle, where she played her entire 19-year career. She earned 13 All-Star selections and was the league&#8217;s all-time leader in assists (3,234), starts (580) and minutes played (18,080). Bird was the No. 1 pick by Seattle in 2002 after leading UConn to two national championships in her time at the school. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.
