Israeli forces have carried out a devastating bombardment across Lebanon<\/a>, killing hundreds of people, hours after a two-week ceasefire was announced in the United States-Israeli war on Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s Civil Defence said at least 254 people were killed and 1,165 others were wounded in air strikes that targeted areas in Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, Sidon, and several villages in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military said that the attack was its largest coordinated assault on Lebanon since it started a new military operation in the country on March 2, \u201ctargeting more than 100 Hezbollah command centres and military sites\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a written statement, the head of Lebanon\u2019s syndicate of doctors, Elias Chlela, urgently called for \u201call physicians from all specialities\u201d to head to any hospital they could to offer help, with one of Beirut\u2019s biggest hospitals saying it needed donations of all blood types.<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Lebanon was not part of the US-Iran truce, but mediator Pakistan said that the ceasefire included the country.\u00a0 US President Donald Trump said Lebanon was \u201cseparate\u201d and not part of the agreement.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how the world has reacted to the attacks<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Lebanon<\/p>\n

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called the attacks on densely populated areas a \u201cfull-fledged war crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2060\u201cToday\u2019s crime, coinciding with the ceasefire agreement declared in the region \u2014 an agreement that Israel and its political and security apparatus have failed to uphold \u2014 is a serious test for the international community and a blatant challenge to all international laws, norms, and conventions, which Israel violates daily through its unprecedented campaign of human assassination in modern history,\u201d Berri said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also a test for all Lebanese \u2014 political, religious, and civil leaders \u2014 to unite in solidarity with the martyrs. May God have mercy on the martyrs, grant a speedy recovery to the wounded, and protect Lebanon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah<\/p>\n

The Lebanese armed group said it had a \u201cright\u201d to respond to the attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe affirm that the blood of the martyrs and the wounded will not be shed in vain, and that today\u2019s massacres, like all acts of aggression and savage crimes, confirm our natural and legal right to resist the occupation and respond to its aggression,\u201d Hezbollah said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told the news agency Reuters that the Israeli strikes were \u201ca grave violation of the ceasefire\u201d, adding there would be \u201crepercussions for the entire agreement\u201d if they continued.<\/p>\n

Israel<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel \u201cinsisted on separating the war with Iran with the fighting in Lebanon in order to change the reality in Lebanon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also told a news conference that Israel would \u201ccontinue to strike\u201d Lebanon as the US-Iran ceasefire did not apply to Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that it will respond to the attacks on Lebanon if Israel does not stop the assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe issue a firm warning to the United States, which violates treaties, and to its Zionist ally, its executioner: if the aggression against beloved Lebanon does not cease immediately, we will fulfil our duty and deliver a response,\u201d the IRGC said in a statement carried on Iran\u2019s state-owned TV channel, using a reference to Israel.<\/p>\n

In a post on X, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the terms of the ceasefire were \u201cclear and explicit: the US must choose \u2014 ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

US<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump<\/a> told the US public broadcaster PBS that Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire deal with Iran due to Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019ll get taken care of too,\u201d he reportedly said, adding: \u201cThat\u2019s a separate skirmish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance told reporters that there was a \u201clegitimate misunderstanding\u201d regarding Iran\u2019s position on Lebanon\u2019s inclusion in the ceasefire deal; however, contradicting Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif<\/a>, the key intermediary in the US-Iran ceasefire talks, who had said the truce would include Lebanon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Israelis, as I understand it \u2026 have actually offered to, frankly, to check themselves a little bit in Lebanon, because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful,\u201d Vance said, without elaborating.<\/p>\n

Qatar<\/p>\n

The foreign ministry condemned the \u201cbrutal series\u201d of Israeli attacks on Lebanon that had killed hundreds of people, calling the attacks a \u201cdangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the sister Lebanese Republic, the rules of international humanitarian law, and United Nations Security Council Resolution (1701).\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by compelling the Israeli occupation authorities to halt their barbaric massacres and repeated attacks on Lebanon, and to hold them accountable for respecting international covenants and laws,\u201d a statement posted on X read.<\/p>\n

It added that Qatar was in \u201cfull solidarity\u201d with Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Egypt<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Israel\u2019s attacks on Lebanon had a \u201cpremeditated intent\u201d to undermine regional and international efforts to reduce escalation.<\/p>\n

The ministry added that the attacks were an attempt by Israel to drag the region into \u201ctotal chaos\u201d.<\/p>\n

Turkiye<\/p>\n

The foreign ministry said in a statement that it \u201cfirmly\u201d condemns Israel\u2019s attacks on Lebanon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese attacks are worsening the humanitarian situation in the country,\u201d said the ministry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe international community must act immediately to put an end to the Israeli occupation of Lebanon and protect civilians,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

Spain<\/p>\n

In a post on X, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Netanyahu\u2019s \u201ccontempt for life and international law is intolerable\u201d in light of the attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to speak clearly: \u2013 Lebanon must be included in the ceasefire. \u2013 The international community must condemn this new violation of international law. \u2013 The European Union must suspend its Association Agreement with Israel. \u2013 And there must be no impunity for these criminal acts,\u201d Sanchez said.<\/p>\n

Italy<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he spoke to the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and expressed solidarity for the \u201cunjustified and unacceptable attacks he is suffering from Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to avoid there being a second Gaza. We will reiterate this concept to the Israeli Ambassador as well, whom I have summoned to the Farnesina. We condemn the bombings on the Lebanese civilian population, including the gunfire incidents suffered by our UNIFIL [UN Interim Force in Lebanon] troops, for which we continue to demand guarantees of total safety. We must absolutely avoid any further expansion of the conflict that would jeopardise the ceasefire in Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d Tajani added.<\/p>\n

United Nations<\/p>\n

The deputy spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Farhan Haq, said the UN \u201cstrongly condemns\u201d Israel\u2019s attacks on Lebanon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United Nations strongly condemns the strikes by Israel across Lebanon that resulted in significant civilian casualties,\u201d said Haq.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to call on all sides to avail themselves of diplomatic channels, cease hostilities\u201d, and use the new US-Iran ceasefire as an opportunity to prevent further loss of life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

UN rights chief Volker Turk said the attacks were \u201chorrific\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch carnage, within hours of agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran, defies belief. It places enormous pressure on a fragile peace, which is so desperately needed by civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Cross<\/p>\n

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was \u201coutraged by the devastating death and destruction\u201d in densely populated areas across Lebanon.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny comprehensive agreement for the region must consider the safety, protection and dignity of civilians in Lebanon,\u201d said an ICRC statement.<\/p>\n
