Jennie Garth said she and the late Shannen Doherty\u2019s infamous feud <\/a>was caused by them being viciously pitted against one another while co-starring on \u201cBeverly Hills, 90210.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garth and Doherty\u2019s characters in the iconic \u201990s series \u2014 Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh, respectively \u2014 were rivals on the show, which Garth said translated into how people perceived their relationship in real life.<\/p>\n

The actress said it was \u201cconfusing\u201d for them both, admitting they would sometimes \u201cclash.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt brought that more into the forefront than the friendship and the admiration that we innately had for one another,\u201d she told People magazine <\/a>in an interview published Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Garth said that she and Doherty did have things they bonded over, like both of them being Aries zodiac signs.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very closely connected with her parents and her father\u2019s health challenges, I too was going through the same exact thing at the same time,\u201d she recalled. \u201cAnd there were a lot of adult things happening for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were doing the best we could, and so sometimes strong women will clash, especially when they\u2019re young and sort of uneducated about friendship and the importance of it,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Looking back, she said the media and fans\u2019 fixation on their rivalry put them both in a \u201cterrible\u201d position.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody was guiding us,\u201d she noted. \u201cNobody was getting therapy then, nobody was talking to us about things, we were both just fending for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt did reach points of conflict, but at the end of the day, we really did have respect for one another as strong women that lasted a long time in this industry,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Garth, 54, said Doherty taught her a lot about being strong and standing up for herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m forever grateful for her and for the relationship that we had, even though at times it was complicated,\u201d she acknowledged. \u201cIt was still really good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doherty died<\/a>\u00a0on July 13, 2024, at the age of 53 after a lengthy battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Back in March 2024, Doherty recalled a heated fight with Garth<\/a> over a prank she pulled on her when fellow \u201cBeverly Hills, 90210\u201d alum Brian Austin Green appeared on the \u201cCharmed\u201d alum\u2019s podcast, \u201cLet\u2019s Be Clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, my God, she lost it on me and I was just not in the mood to back down,\u201d Doherty said of Garth.<\/p>\n
