{"id":573280,"date":"2026-04-09T05:58:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/573280\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T05:58:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:58:15","slug":"top-economist-says-the-u-s-role-in-the-world-is-being-eroded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/573280\/","title":{"rendered":"Top economist says the U.S. role in the world is being eroded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, the U.S. and Iran agreed to a <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-war-ceasefire-trump-hormuz-israel-lebanon-rcna267205\">two-week ceasefire<\/a> in a last-minute deal before President Donald Trump&#8217;s deadline for Iran to meet his demands or face wide-scale destruction. <\/p>\n<p>In that deal was a commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that normally handles about <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/How-Much-Oil-Passes-Through-the-Strait-of-Hormuz\">20 million barrels<\/a> of crude oil per day, for the next 14 days.<\/p>\n<p>But even with the strait reopened, oil tankers <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/business\/energy\/all-eyes-on-hormuz-strait-marine-traffic-starting-to-move-as-two-week-ceasefire-kicks-in-1.500500150\">haven\u2019t exactly resumed &#8220;normal&#8221; operations<\/a>. And until this war meets its official end, about 20% of the world&#8217;s supply of oil continues to sit in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarketplace\u201d host Kai Ryssdal spoke with economist Mohamed El-Erian, the Rene M.
