It turns out it may be something even stranger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astronomers have proposed a radical alternative to the long-held belief that a supermassive black hole sits at the centre of the Milky Way, suggesting that instead a dense clump of dark matter could generate the same gravitational effects.<\/p>\n<p>The new study, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, argues that an ultra-compact dark matter core can explain both the rapid motions of stars near our galactic centre and the larger-scale rotation of our Galaxy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gravitational-lensing.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's impression of gravitational lensing. Credit: dottedhippo \/ Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-177279\"\/>Credit: dottedhippo \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A new theory for Sagittarius A*?<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the object known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/sagittarius-a-black-hole-images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sagittarius A*<\/a> has been interpreted as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black hole<\/a> more than four million times the mass of the Sun, largely because stars in its vicinity, called S-stars, whirl around<br \/>it at enormous speeds.<\/p>\n<p>However, an international team have put forward a fermionic dark matter model that could reproduce the same stellar motions without a black hole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time a dark matter model has successfully bridged these vastly different scales and various object orbits, including modern rotation curve and central stars data,\u201d says the study\u2019s co-author Dr Carlos Arg\u00fcelles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/sagittarius-a-meerkat.jpg\" alt=\"An image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, captured by the MeerKAT radio telescope.
