\n\tWill the stars align for Cannes? That was a key question heading into Thursday\u2019s unveiling of the\u00a0Cannes Film Festival 2026<\/a> lineup, which took shape during its unveiling in Paris. The answer is a bit of a mixed bag: arthouse stars \u2013 yes, Hollywood stars \u2013 not so much. As things stand right now, Cannes 2026<\/a> promises a mix of well-known and emerging arthouse voices, but maybe less star wattage than recent editions of the world\u2019s biggest film festival, even though French superstars L\u00e9a Seydoux and Catherine Deneuve alone will bring two movies<\/a> to the competition program.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther big names starring in Cannes 2026 films include the likes of Rami Malek (in Ira Sachs\u2019 The Man I Love), Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan (in Cristian Mungiu\u2019s English-language debut Fjord,) Isabelle Huppert (in Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi\u2019s Parallel Tales), Sandra H\u00fcller (in Fatherland from Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski) and Javier Bardem (in Rodrigo Sorogoyen\u2019s The Beloved), but organizers acknowledged a lack of Hollywood studio fare<\/a> lined up for this year\u2019s edition of the fest. And Sachs is the only U.S. director in the competition program.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat said, arthouse darlings galore will head to the south of France to premiere their new films on the Croisette. Among them are the likes of Sachs, Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/a>, Farhadi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Marie Kreutzer, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes, Volker Schl\u00f6ndorff, Jane Schoenbrun, Mungiu, Lukas Dhont, Pawlikowski and Ry\u00fbsuke Hamaguchi.<\/p>\n

\n\tArtistic director Thierry Fr\u00e9maux, with president Iris Knobloch<\/a> by his side, discussed the official selection, the popular Un Certain Regard sidebar and other parts of the program for the 79th edition, also highlighting the fact that five of the 21 competition films unveiled, or about a quarter, are from female directors.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Cannes team\u2019s lineup isn\u2019t complete, meaning it will add more titles in the coming weeks. But among the names that had been suggested for this year\u2019s fest, as reported by THR, that didn\u2019t make Thursday\u2019s cut are the likes of Joel Cohen, Takashi Miike<\/a>, Lars von Trier, Radu Jude<\/a>, Werner Herzog and James Gray, whose Paper Tiger, with a cast featuring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Miles Teller, would bring serious star power to the Croisette. <\/p>\n

\n\tGiven the importance of the festival for the independent circuit and awards season \u2013 Oscar nominees and winners Sentimental Value<\/a>, It Was Just an Accident<\/a>, The Secret Agent<\/a>, and S\u00eerat<\/a> all premiered in Cannes last year \u2013 distributors and audiences will be combing the 2026 selection for signs of this year\u2019s breakouts.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast week, Cannes unveiled<\/a> that its 2026 edition would open with Pierre Salvadori\u2019s 1920s-set\u00a0La V\u00e9nus \u00e9lectrique (The Electric Kiss) on May 12, following the opening ceremony hosted by actress Eye Ha\u00efdara. It also unveiled<\/a> the world premiere of John Travolta<\/a>\u2019s directorial debut,\u00a0Propeller One-Way Night Coach,\u00a0in the Cannes Premiere Selection.<\/p>\n

\n\tSouth Korean\u00a0director Park Chan-wook<\/a>, the acclaimed filmmaker behind\u00a0Oldboy<\/a>,\u00a0The Handmaiden and\u00a0No Other Choice<\/a>, will be the jury president<\/a> at Cannes 2026, heading up the group that will select the winners of this year\u2019s awards. Jafar Panahi\u2019s It Was Just an Accident<\/a> won last year\u2019s Cannes Palme d\u2019Or<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tAmong big-name creatives who have previously been lined up for Cannes next month, New Zealand filmmaker and The Lord of the Rings<\/a>\u00a0director Peter Jackson will receive an honorary Palme d\u2019Or<\/a> in recognition of his life\u2019s work at this year\u2019s\u00a0festival, as will actress\/singer\/director and EGOT winner Barbra Streisand<\/a>. The 79th annual Cannes Film Festival<\/a> runs May 12-23.<\/p>\n

\n\tKnobloch started off Thursday\u2019s proceedings by highlighting that \u201cthe news coming from all around the world is all but reassuring.\u201d So, why organize a film festival during such a \u201ctime of great uncertainty\u201d? She highlighted: \u201cCannes was born at a time of great uncertainty, in 1939.\u201d Gathering filmmakers back then \u201cwas not a luxury, it was a necessity\u201d to showcase the \u201ccapacity to dream\u201d and humans at their best, she said. And Knobloch highlighted the need for a space of freedom and a space that gives visibility to people and important issues.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the age of AI and major conflicts, she also called Cannes \u201ca milestone in the hurricane, not a closed fortress but a place where the values are not adjusting according to the wind.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Knobloch addressed the rise of artificial intelligence. \u201cWe are defending the freedom of creation for all human beings, but only for human beings,\u201d she said. \u201cAI is already in the studio and the editing rooms and the process of creation. We will not close our eyes, but we refuse [to let] AI dictate its law to cinema. Behind each picture, there is a moviemaker, but also dozens, sometimes hundreds of, people who put their talent, their skill, their energy, their soul, in a shared project. A movie is not just a patchwork of data, it\u2019s a personal vision.\u201d Her conclusion: \u201cAI knows how to imitate very well, but it will never know how to feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFr\u00e9maux, early on in the press conference, argued that \u201cthe language of cinema has won\u201d after worries about the death of cinema, suggesting that even on social media, it was alive and well. Cannes programmers have been busy watching films, with 2,541 features submitted this year from 141 countries, he also highlighted, mentioning that the submissions are up by 1,000 from 10 years ago.<\/p>\n
