Toast, the point-of-sale company that has bedeviled many a QR orderer, put out some pretty fascinating numbers this week. They have stats on the price of a beer in all fifty states, along with the largest 20 US cities. The median price in the US is around six and a half dollars a beer, but that belies the pretty huge range across states. Mississippi has the cheapest beer, still below $5, while Hawaii, where everything is expensive because it\u2019s an island in the middle of the Pacific, is $8. California and New York are just behind it. Curiously, Oregon\u2019s average is bang-on the national average, which makes it the cheapest pint on the West Coast by quite a margin. There\u2019s a caveat in these numbers. Nowhere does Toast define the unit of measure: \u201cIn March 2026, the median price of a beer in the U.S. was $6.52, up 1.9% compared to March 2025.\u201d They don\u2019t describe their methodology, but I would assume it involves beer transactions, which in many cases are not standardized by volume. A 14-ounce shaker pint at a dive bar and a 20-ounce imperial pint at a craft beer bar may well live together in their dataset. It\u2019s also worth noting that beer prices in cities are higher than in rural areas. Of the twenty largest cities, only two have prices below the national median price. Mississippi is the fourth most-rural state, and also the cheapest for beer. California, Massachusetts, and New York are among the most urban. It\u2019s not a perfect correlation, but it\u2019s a factor.
