The Getty \u2014 one of California\u2019s most iconic art museums<\/a> \u2014 is going dark.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles hilltop museum will shut its doors to the public on March 15, 2027, and is scheduled to reopen in spring 2028 as it undergoes major renovations to enhance the visitor experience ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetty is embarking on an exciting new chapter,\u201d said Katherine E. Fleming, president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, in a statement.<\/p>\n

Perched above the Los Angeles Basin in the Santa Monica Mountains in Brentwood<\/a>, the Getty is set for major upgrades across its campus \u2014 revitalized galleries, improved accessibility, and a renovated welcome hall with a new cafe, bookstore and retail area.<\/p>\n

The overhaul will also include improvements to buildings, public spaces, and utilities to align long-term stewardship and sustainability goals.<\/p>\n

The La Brea Tar Pits is undergoing its first renovation in its 50-year history. Getty Images<\/p>\n

During the closure, Getty will continue working with partners in Los Angeles, across the United States and around the world on various programs.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, other cultural institutions around the city are following suit.<\/p>\n

The La Brea Tar Pits \u2014 one of the largest repositories of Ice Age fossils in the world \u2014 is undergoing its first renovation in its 50-year history and will close its doors for two years this summer, in preparation for visitors attending LA28.<\/p>\n
