Jayson Tatum posts 24 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists in return to MSG.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Jayson Tatum turned in a vintage performace at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night for the first time since rupturing his Achilles tendon there in last season\u2019s playoffs.<\/p>\n

The Celtics star posted 24 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, shooting 7-for-22 (2-10 3PM) from the floor and 8-for-10 at the line in 40 minutes. New York took the victory, 112-106<\/a>, behind 25 points and 10 assists from Jalen Brunson.<\/p>\n

Tatum played without teammate Jaylen Brown, though, as the Celtics ruled him out of their showdown against the New York Knicks with left Achilles tendinitis.<\/p>\n

The Celtics missed out on a chance to lock up the No. 2 seed<\/a> in the Eastern Conference with a victory, a position that many thought was unrealistic because they would be playing for at least most of the season without Tatum.<\/p>\n

He was hurt last May 12 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals when he fell to the court in the fourth quarter of a Knicks victory. New York went on to win the series, ending the Celtics\u2019 championship reign.<\/p>\n

Tatum went through the Celtics\u2019 morning shootaround at MSG on Thursday and told reporters afterward that he felt \u201cnervousness, anxiousness. All the things you probably would expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how he would get through it, he added: \u201cI think it\u2019s just deciding to face the challenge head-on and put my uniform on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum returned March 6 and has played in 16 games. He said after the Celtics\u2019 home victory over Charlotte on Tuesday that he wasn\u2019t \u201cthrilled to go back and play\u201d at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast time I played there, obviously, it was a traumatic experience for me,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Tatum drew plenty of spectators as he went through his pregame warmups near the Celtics bench. Coach Joe Mazzulla said he had a chance to talk to his star forward earlier in the day and praised the way he was preparing for the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think one of his greatest strengths is just his vulnerability and openness and his understanding. It\u2019s an opportunity tonight and obviously another small checkmark in his journey, which he\u2019s done a great job handling those, and expect him to be able to do the same tonight,\u201d Mazzulla said. \u201cThere\u2019s both, right? There\u2019s a ton of emotions but also opportunity and I think he\u2019s ready for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown helped carry the Celtics through Tatum\u2019s absence with a superb season.
