Los Angeles Times via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Marine Mammal Stranding Center and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/amseasorg\/posts\/pfbid0KSoghqKS7FSZFEZBYDZt3XM6DrBPz9kmvQPSMvjTUgqHNhx8CbKz27Wks2npPDoTl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Atlantic Marine Conservation Society<\/a> said they are working in tandem with federal and state officials to recover the massive corpse.<\/p>\n<p>The center said it will share more details about the whale, including its likely cause of death, after a necropsy is performed. <\/p>\n<p>The Newark Bay is just east of the Newark Liberty International Airport. <\/p>\n<p>It is also the base for the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, the largest shipping container facility in the tri-state area and one of the busiest ports in the US. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.77777778;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39042529\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AdobeStock_84066010.jpg\" alt=\"Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal with container ships and cranes.\" class=\"wp-image-39042529\"  \/>The Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal is in Newark Bay. mandritoiu \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Several dead whales have washed up in the waters surrounding the Big Apple over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Bight, the coastal area between the city, Long Island and the Jersey shore, had 10 whale fatalities in the last year alone,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/dead-whale-washes-up-on-rockaway-beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">according to Gothamist.<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"ELYQF6F43ZGQHEY3QIBLKTOWJU\">In late March, a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/26\/us-news\/massive-40-foot-whale-carcass-washes-up-on-nyc-beach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gargantuan 40-foot Sei whale carcass<\/a> washed ashore on Rockaway Beach.
