This is the first WTA 500 event of the clay-court swing, and the last eight has thrown up some compelling storylines–from teenage home wild card Lilli Tagger making history to veteran Karolina Pliskova pulling off one of the week’s biggest upsets. Who do you back to make the semifinal?

WTA Linz Quarterfinal Predictions
Jelena Ostapenko vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Ostapenko needed to dig deep in the second round, coming back from 1-5 down in the second set to beat Alexandra Eala 6-4 7-5. It was her first clay win of the season, but the Latvian has always been dangerous on the surface; she won the French Open in 2017 and knows how to dictate with her heavy ball-striking. Ruse has solid clay pedigree and reached this stage without dropping a set, but Ostapenko’s Linz experience–she is 9-2 lifetime at the event–and her ability to raise her level when behind gives her the edge in what should be a high-intensity matchup.
Prediction: Ostapenko in 2

Mirra Andreeva vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Andreeva looked sharp in her clay opener, handling Sloane Stephens 6-4 6-2 in just over an hour. The young Russian’s athleticism and variety make her well-suited to clay. Cirstea has strong clay credentials of her own and has been one of the better stories on tour in 2026, but her opponent Galfi retired early in their second-round match, leaving the Romanian relatively untested here. Andreeva’s cleaner movement and fresher legs should let her control the longer rallies.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2

Anastasia Potapova vs Lilli Tagger

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Tagger produced the upset of the tournament so far, edging third seed Liudmila Samsonova in a thriller to reach her first WTA quarterfinal on clay. The local wild card has been piling up clay-court wins at lower levels and clearly enjoys the surface, and the home crowd will push her through tight moments. Potapova, though, is a former Linz champion who knows these conditions well. Her experience in the big moments at this level should ultimately prove the difference.
Prediction: Potapova in 3

Donna Vekic vs Karolina Pliskova

Head-to-Head: Pliskova 7–3 Vekic

Vekic got a walkover into the quarterfinals, so she arrives relatively fresh, but Pliskova’s 6-1 6-3 demolition of second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova was the result of the week and suggests the Czech is timing the ball well. Pliskova holds a 2-0 clay head-to-head edge over Vekic, and her bigger serve and reliable hold game on indoor clay should give her the steadier platform in what could be a high-scoring affair.
Prediction: Pliskova in 2

Main Photo Credit: John E.
