Greg and Carrie Penner’s investment in the Colorado Rockies marks a strategic expansion into MLB, supporting the Denver sports scene.<\/p>\n

DENVER \u2014 In less than four years, Greg and Carrie Penner have established themselves as some of the top owners in professional sports, helping the Broncos restore their winning tradition while making significant private contributions to the local community.<\/p>\n

The hope now is the Penners\u2019 early ownership success can rub off on another Denver sports team.<\/p>\n

Through a significant investment from Penner Sports Group\u2014the same entity that holds the Penner family\u2019s stake in the Broncos \u2014 Greg and Carrie Penner have become significant minority partners with the Colorado Rockies, 9NEWS has learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Denver Post is one of the previous minority investors bought out by the Penners. The transaction has been officially approved by Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n

Penner Sports Group\u2019s investment share\u2014which is approximately 40 percent according to sources\u2014makes Greg and Carrie Penner the Rockies\u2019 largest minority parter. As such, it\u2019s worth noting they will have no day-to-day roles or responsibilities with the club. The Monfort family remains the majority and controlling owners with Dick Monfort continuing as chairman & CEO, Charlie Monfort remaining as owner\/general partner and Walker Monfort leading day-to-day operations as club president.<\/p>\n

The relationship between Monfort and Penner became known through a 9NEWS story published during the Rockies\u2019 2025 home opener: \u201cI like Greg Penner a lot,\u2019\u2019 Monfort said. \u201cYou know, he\u2019s pretty upfront. He knows what he doesn\u2019t know. I\u2019ve had breakfast with Greg half a dozen times and you can tell he\u2019s thinking about things. He\u2019s thinking about fan experience. He\u2019s thinking about the team, of course. But he\u2019s also thinking about long-term. It\u2019s not like when you talk to him the only thing he talks about is this year\u2019s team or Bo Nix or something. He\u2019s thinking this all out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s great in the community. I like him a lot. I like his wife, too. She\u2019s very impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two months after that 9NEWS story was published, Monfort and Penner began talking about becoming partners in the Rockies.<\/p>\n

While the Penners\u2019 roles with the Broncos will not change and the Monforts\u2019 roles with the Rockies will not change, this partnership is significant for two prominent franchises locally and in their respective leagues.<\/p>\n

In a statement provided to 9NEWS, Dick Monfort said, \u201cI\u2019ve had the pleasure to build a strong relationship with Greg and Carrie over the past few years. For many reasons, including their recent success with the Broncos, we know we are gaining much more than just financial support in this partnership with Penner Sports Group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Penner Sports Group, the Rockies say, will support both short and long-term strategic planning for the club through this minority partnership. The investment amount\u2014while not disclosed publicly\u2014figures to be several hundred million dollars based on the club\u2019s $1.68 billion valuation according to Forbes\u2019 annual MLB team rankings published in March. That much-needed cash influx will allow the Rockies to retire all outstanding debt while investing capital into both the on-field product and the fan experience.<\/p>\n

Avid sports fans, the Penners have \u201cenjoyed getting to know the Monforts\u201d during last few years and talks began in 2025 over the possibility of a partnership. This transaction is the latest in a series of moves the Rockies have made recently to position the franchise for long-term success in an evolving and challenging MLB landscape.<\/p>\n

This offseason, the Rockies have revamped their front office with several key moves, promoting Walker Monfort to team President and hiring longtime executives Paul DePodesta and Josh Byrnes this offseason to oversee baseball operations. They\u2019ve also made several other staff additions to modernize their business operations.<\/p>\n

While still early in the 2026 season, the Rockies are a competitive 5-6 entering their game Friday night at San Diego, a promising start following three consecutive 100-loss campaigns.<\/p>\n

Dick Monfort remains an influential owner in league circles. He is expected to be heavily involved in labor negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA as a potential lockout looms with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expiring in December.<\/p>\n

The Penners\u2019 expanded commitment to the Rockies and the Denver sports community at large should be a welcome sight given their sizable impact as owners of the region\u2019s pro sports crown jewel, the Denver Broncos. And, the move figures to be applauded from the Monfort perspective with Rockies ownership demonstrating stewardship of a popular franchise by making this move to best position it for long-term success.<\/p>\n

While the Penners\u2019 commitment and presence around the Broncos will not change with their added minority investment in the Rockies, their experience in running an NFL team should provide some benefit to the MLB franchise.<\/p>\n

In four seasons with the Broncos, the Penners took a franchise in the midst of an eight-year playoff drought and returned it to prominence with back-to-back postseason appearances that included hosting last year\u2019s AFC Championship Game. With an experienced head coach in Sean Payton, general manager George Paton and emerging quarterback Bo Nix, the Broncos figure to be among the favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LXI this season.<\/p>\n

Off the field, the Penners\u2019 impact has been just as notable. They are set to move into a $175 million training facility by June and have identified a preferred site for a privately funded stadium development at Burnham Yard set to open in 2031.<\/p>\n

This follows a $100 million infusion to upgrade Empower Field at Mile High several years ago to enhance the gameday experience, which this past year led the NFL according to Voice of the Fan survey results.<\/p>\n

Greg and Carrie Penner, who are among only four owners to receive an \u2018A\u2019 grade in the last three NFLPA surveys, have made it a priority to pour significant resources into the community through the Denver Broncos Foundation. It has grown exponentially, granting more than $8 million this year,<\/p>\n

It is common for sports owners to have entities for their portfolio holdings. With this latest investment in the Rockies, Greg and Carrie Penner, through their Penner Sports Group family ownership entity portfolio, will join only a handful of owners with significant stakes in multiple sports teams among the primary sports: NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. This includes Stan Kroenke, whose Kroenke Sports and Entertainment oversees the Los Angeles Rams, Nuggets, Avalanche, Rapids, Mammoth and Arsenal.<\/p>\n

The Penner Sports Group now holds not only the family\u2019s stake in the Broncos as part of the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group, but the Rockies as well.<\/p>\n

Last month, it was also disclosed Rob Walton, part of the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group that owns the Broncos, also has a 10 percent stake in the Arizona Diamondbacks and recently led the purchase of the Rajasthan Royals, a cricket team in the Indian Premier League.<\/p>\n
