If the idea of a 3D-printed golf club<\/a> isn\u2019t confusing enough, Bryson DeChambeau did his best to further muddy the situation Thursday after a disappointing first round at the Masters.<\/p>\n

DeChambeau had a rather awkward post-round interview about his 3D-printed 5 iron after posting a 4-over 76 that had him outside the top 50 after 18 holes at Augusta National.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a longer conversation,\u201d DeChambeau said when asked about the club. \u201cNot for here.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeChambeau first unveiled the 3D-printed clubs during the 2024 Masters, with the United States Golf Association (USGA) having to approve them.<\/p>\n

He explained at the time how the specifications of the clubs aid him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI designed them with someone from back home, and they have just got a different curvature on the face than other equipment,\u201d DeChambeau said two years ago. \u201cMost equipment is flat. These have a different curvature on the face that allows me to have my mis-hits to go a little straighter sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a poor showing Thursday that could result in him missing the cut Friday, DeChambeau detailed how the prints take eight hours but then require going through a machine for three to four hours.<\/p>\n

The USGA process for approving the clubs includes \u201ca robot that measures a club\u2019s geometry and material properties, making sure they comply with the USGA\u2019s standards,\u201d according to The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then you have to do a bunch of other stuff,\u201d he added. \u201cYou can have something in a day and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n

He used the club on the seventh hole Thursday, saying it was \u201cgreat\u201d and he hit a \u201cgreat second shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if that was something he would \u201cwant to do for the weekend for any reason,\u201d DeChambeau made a fact and a \u201cPfft\u201d sound as if the question was absurd.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. It has to be USGA conforming, there\u2019s this whole process you have to go through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Even with his fancy club, DeChambeau\u2019s day went south Thursday<\/a> when it took him three strokes to get out of the bunker on the 11th hole and he ultimately settled for a triple bogey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said DeChambeau: \u201cBunker was softer than I anticipated.\u201d<\/p>\n
