Seven people, all in the United States illegally, have been sentenced to federal prison for their part in the operation.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The so-called ringleader of a nationwide burglary ring that targeted homes across the country, including one in West Michigan, has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison, as investigators reveal how a single break-in in Kent County helped unravel the entire operation.

Federal prosecutors say John Quintero-Herrera led a sophisticated, multi-state crew responsible for burglarizing homes in at least seven states, stealing more than $1.5 million in cash, jewelry and valuables.

Six others have also been sentenced, while one suspect remains on the run. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, all seven individuals so far sentenced were in the United States illegally.

But it was a December 5, 2024, break-in in Cascade Township that ultimately exposed the group.

“That one, you knew right off the bat it was different,” Kent County Sheriff’s Office Detective Timothy DykGraaf told 13 ON YOUR SIDE Friday.

Investigators said the home had been carefully targeted, not randomly chosen. Inside, it was ransacked and a safe had been cut open.

The group is charged with taking $40,000 in cash and roughly $5,000,000 in heirloom jewelry from the home in Cascade Township alone.

What stood out wasn’t just what was taken, but how the suspects operated.

“They would put GPS trackers on victims’ vehicles, follow them, watch their routines,” DykGraaf said.

He said the group would use wireless surveillance cameras they bought online to monitor their victims in real time, hiding them in the bushes of neighboring homes.

That suspicion was confirmed as detectives dug deeper.

According to a federal complaint, suspects tied to the case had searched the Cascade Township victim’s home and business nearly 60 times online in the days leading up to the break-in.

They were also running searches to find out how close the nearest police station was.

Using search warrants, cellphone data and digital records, investigators began connecting the dots.

Phone data placed suspects in West Michigan at the time of the burglary. A distinctive SUV seen on neighborhood cameras matched a vehicle tied to the group in other states.

And thousands of messages, almost all in Spanish, revealed a coordinated effort to identify and track victims.

“That took resources… a lot of time to go through,” DykGraaf said. “Trying to identify people, match locations… it all started to come together.”

What started as a local investigation quickly expanded nationwide.

Authorities said the group operated out of Los Angeles and New York, flying into target areas, renting short-term homes and carrying out multiple burglaries before leaving.

Victims were often small business owners, specifically chosen because suspects believed they kept cash and valuables at home.

In total, investigators tied the group to more than eight burglaries across Michigan and six other states, with losses climbing into the millions.

For DykGraaf and his team, the case is a point of pride, but also a warning.

“They may have gotten away with it other places,” he said, “but when they come here, we’ll use all of our resources… to drive it forward.”

What began with a single home invasion in Cascade Township ultimately helped dismantle a coast-to-coast burglary network and put its leader behind bars.

Seven people, all in the United States illegally, have been sentenced to federal prison for their part in…

[18
23,3,21,19,22,20,25,24
post-576863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-united-states","tag-america","tag-news","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
