{"id":577533,"date":"2026-04-11T07:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T07:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/577533\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T07:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T07:41:10","slug":"brooks-koepka-responds-to-tom-watson-saying-liv-golfers-should-still-be-banned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/577533\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooks Koepka Responds to Tom Watson Saying LIV Golfers Should Still Be Banned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">AUGUSTA \u2014 Brooks Koepka has generally been received well by his peers on his return to the PGA Tour this year after four years with the LIV Golf League.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">But he said Tom Watson isn\u2019t alone in his feelings that the path back should not have been so easy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">A day after the two-time Masters winner who took part in the ceremonial opening tee shots on Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/masters\/tom-watson-says-pga-tour-reneged-promise-ban-liv-golfers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said the Tour \u201creneged\u201d on its promise to ban players for life<\/a> who went to the LIV Golf League, Koepka was made aware of the comments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">WATCH LIVE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/xDxBw-M2bMs?si=YatIJKo1gZWXBftj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Dan Evans Show from Augusta<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">\u201cI would have to look at exactly what he said,\u201d Koepka said Friday after a second-round 69 at the Masters. \u201cJust going off your summary, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7j\">\u201cThat\u2019s fine if he thinks that. He\u2019s not the first person that\u2019s thought that. So yeah, it is what it is. I\u2019m just grateful to be out here. The people that make those decisions let me out here. If you\u2019re going to get the opportunity to come back out, you\u2019re going to take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7m\">Koepka is back via what the PGA Tour called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/brooks-koepka-pga-tour-return-raises-questions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Returning Member Program<\/a>, which was only offered to players who had won major championships from 2022 to &#8217;25, meaning it only was meant for him, Cam Smith, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7p\">Koepka won the 2023 PGA Championship, which is why he is exempt for the Masters. Part of his way back to the PGA Tour involved a $5 million fine and the inability to play in signature events via sponsor invites unless he qualified for them. He also is precluded from the player equity program for five years.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7s\">\u201cI thought the LIV players, when they left, they were supposed to be banned for life,\u201d Watson said. \u201cIf I was commissioner, that\u2019s what I would do. I\u2019d say if you\u2019re finished with your contract with LIV Golf, if you want to play the PGA Tour again, you come back, and you must play the Korn Ferry Tour for a year to qualify for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7y\">Before LIV Golf launched, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan did threaten lifetime bans. But that never became official. Members who played for LIV were issued indefinite suspensions. Non-members got a one-year ban.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"81\">Koepka is back this year and Patrick Reed, who won the 2018 Masters, was allowed to return under a different scenario that won\u2019t allow him to play in PGA Tour events until the fall.
