{"id":577620,"date":"2026-04-11T08:47:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T08:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/577620\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T08:47:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T08:47:15","slug":"noah-kahan-talks-his-out-of-body-netflix-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/577620\/","title":{"rendered":"Noah Kahan Talks His Out of Body Netflix Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/noah-kahan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_noah-kahan_1\" data-tag=\"noah-kahan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Kahan<\/a> gets more personal in his new documentary than he was comfortable with at times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a> documentary, directed by Nick Sweeney, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter opens up about his relationship with parents and his struggle with body dysmorphia, among other personal topics. He is  earnest throughout the film, and jokes with The Hollywood Reporter that he\u2019d made peace with it all by pretending the doc would never come out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Grammy-nominated musician is sitting on a porch, joining Sweeney on this Zoom to discuss the new documentary, Noah Kahan: Out of Body. Releasing on Netflix April 13, the 90-minute documentary follows Kahan after his assent to mainstream stardom thanks to his 2022 album, Stick Season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhen we first started making the film, we really had no idea what we would be capturing,\u201d Sweeney tells THR. \u201cI thought that if all we got was this extraordinary tour and Noah playing this hugely significant show at Fenway, what an amazing film that would be. As we got started, [I] I realized there\u2019s actually so much more going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhat could\u2019ve been a straightforward tour documentary is instead an intimate look at Kahan\u2019s relationships with himself, his family and his beloved home of New England. \u201cAs Nick came along and started filming, a lot more came up to the surface, and we started to realize it was going to be something a little bit bigger than just a tour documentary,\u201d says Kahan. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Kahan.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tNoah Kahan and Gabe Simon at Gold Pacific Studios. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy of Mastercard<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe thing that really interests me is seeing people at crossroads in their life as they grapple with these big questions,\u201d Sweeney adds. \u201cAs soon as Noah and I started talking, it was so clear that he was dealing with these really significant questions in his life about who he was, where was his home and what was he going to do next after this gargantuan album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKahan sprinkles in his work on the album that would become The Great Divide, releasing later this month, including a touching moment where the singer visits his childhood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_music_1\" data-tag=\"music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">music<\/a> teacher and ends up writing a song in the space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe also opens up about personal struggles. The singer shares that he\u2019s dealt with body dysmorphia and disordered eating. \u201c[I] always have felt physically ugly and facially ugly, mentally ugly,\u201d Kahan tells the camera crews in the documentary. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I look like. No clue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Vermont native\u2019s family is present throughout the film. One frequent praise for Kahan\u2019s work is how authentic his music feels. And Kahan\u2019s decision to share his family\u2019s personal business on Stick Season helped make the album relatable. But in the film, the singer says he feels bad he never asked his family for permission, recalling a text from his mother after he made a joke about his parent\u2019s divorce onstage. We got to confront these feelings. We couldn\u2019t all hide from them,\u201d Kahan says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t \u201cWe had to watch this all happen, and it really just makes it feel smaller. It makes it feel more manageable, and it brought us so much closer together after watching the documentary,\u201d he continues. \u201cThat first week felt like we were all floating, especially stuff with my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKahan\u2019s father and their relationship is a centerpiece of Out of Body. The singer, who shares that his father was in a life-changing accident when he was younger, says in the documentary that he wants to apologize to his father for \u201chow selfish and short tempered and judgmental\u201d he\u2019s been of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHim loving this documentary changed our relationship. It could have been so tricky,\u201d Kahan says. \u201cHe just loves me and wants me to be happy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe singer says, deep down, he thinks the story of him and his father was the real of the documentary. \u201cI always cry when I talk about my dad. I don\u2019t know what it is,\u201d Kahan admits. \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t want me to. It\u2019s tricky, but I never felt like I didn\u2019t want to share it. It made me feel good to talk about.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe film is anchored by Kahan\u2019s sold-out Fenway Park performances and his love for home of Vermont and New Hampshire. Given Vermont\u2019s importance the singer and his music, Sweeney says he felt a healthy dose of pressure to portray the area authenticity. \u201cThe thing I really love is how honest people in Vermont are. They really are no bullshit,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe director notes that he and his small crew spent a large amount of time driving around Vermont.  \u201cThe seasons are really interesting in this film. But beyond the music, Kahan and Sweeney hope the film inspires some personal change in its viewers lives. \u201cIt\u2019s not about a magical fairytale ending, it\u2019s just trying to understand the things that you\u2019re going through and name them and approach them,\u201d Sweeney says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI hope that you make that phone call or you look in that mirror, and if you don\u2019t like what you see, ask why and see if there\u2019s something you could do to help change that thought of yourself,\u201d adds Kahan. \u201c[I hope you] ask those initial questions and approach those things that scare you.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Noah Kahan gets more personal in his new documentary than he was comfortable with at times.
