{"id":57837,"date":"2025-08-04T14:26:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T14:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/57837\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T14:26:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T14:26:10","slug":"jobs-report-us-economy-weakening-as-trumps-tariffs-bite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/57837\/","title":{"rendered":"Jobs Report: US economy weakening as Trump\u2019s tariffs bite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The US economy is bending \u2014 but not yet breaking \u2014 beneath the weight of President Donald Trump\u2019s nationalist agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">That is the story told by an avalanche of economic data released last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">According to those new figures, employers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulling back on hiring<\/a> to a dramatic (and unexpected) degree, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/31\/opinion\/tariffs-economy-inflation-recession.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic growth is slowing<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/31\/business\/pce-inflation-fed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consumer prices are rising<\/a>. And there are strong indications that Trump\u2019s trade and immigration policies are driving all of these trends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">While last week\u2019s data provides little sign of an imminent recession or inflationary crisis, protectionism is still imposing a heavy toll on US households and businesses. And if hiring continues to slow \u2014 while firms\u2019 input costs persistently rise \u2014 there is some risk that economic growth could stall out completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Unfortunately, Trump chose to compound that risk on Thursday by doubling down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/trade-deadline-tariffs-trump-deals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his radical trade restrictions<\/a>, imposing tariffs of between 10 percent and 50 percent on the imports of all foreign countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Here is a quick overview of America\u2019s darkening economic picture.<\/p>\n<p>American employers are pulling back on hiring<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">America\u2019s labor market is much weaker than previously thought, a Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> revealed on Friday. US employers added 73,000 jobs in July, far fewer than the 104,000 that economists expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">More alarmingly, the report suggested that job growth was markedly weaker in May and June than the government had previously believed. The BLS always revises its estimates of monthly employment gains, once more data becomes available. Usually, these updates do not fundamentally change the labor market outlook. This time, they did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The government initially thought that employers had added 144,000 jobs in May and 147,000 in June; it now believes that they added just 19,000 during the first month and 14,000 during the second. (Trump responded to this unwelcome information by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpDailyPosts\/status\/1951345190960034147\" rel=\"nofollow\">declaring it fraudulent and firing the head of the BLS<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">This updated data suggests that Trump\u2019s tariffs (and tariff threats) have had a detrimental impact on hiring. After all, Trump has often described his trade policies as a strategy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/407025\/trump-tariffs-reciprocal-trade-war-why-explanation-nostalgia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creating factory jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">But the recent contraction in manufacturing employment makes perfect sense: Trump engineered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/402530\/trump-tariffs-canada-mexico-explanation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large increase in US producers\u2019 costs<\/a> by making foreign-made metal, lumber, semiconductors, and myriad other industrial materials more expensive. This makes it harder for US manufacturers to expand hiring or gain global market share, as they are now less cost-competitive than rivals in countries without large tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">As trade-sensitive sectors have shed workers, employment growth has become almost entirely dependent on the health care sector, which has accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/byHeatherLong\/status\/1951270097068155186\" rel=\"nofollow\">nearly all of the economy\u2019s<\/a> new jobs added in the past three months.<\/p>\n<p>Economic growth is losing steam (and becoming more and more dependent on the AI boom)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The latest data on US economic growth tells a similarly disquieting story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">America\u2019s gross domestic product officially grew at a 3 percent annual rate in the second quarter, after decreasing by 0.5 percent in the first quarter. But both of those figures are misleading. This is because Trump\u2019s trade policies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/31\/opinion\/tariffs-economy-inflation-recession.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greatly exacerbated<\/a> well-known flaws in the government\u2019s approach to calculating GDP. The reasons for this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slowboring.com\/p\/trumps-incredibly-dumb-economic-mistake\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are a bit complex<\/a>, but the upshot is that the government likely underestimated growth in the first quarter and overestimated it in the second, due to massive, tariff-induced swings in US imports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Thus, to get a clear picture of the economy\u2019s growth rate, it\u2019s best to look at GDP trends over the first two quarters combined. And over the first half of this year, America\u2019s gross domestic product <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/31\/opinion\/tariffs-economy-inflation-recession.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanded at a 1.2 percent annualized clip<\/a> \u2014 a much slower pace than both its growth rate in 2024 (2.8 percent) and forecasters\u2019 expectations for 2025 GDP growth when Trump was elected last November (2.1 percent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">As with employment gains, America\u2019s GDP growth is highly imbalanced: An explosion in AI infrastructure spending is playing an outsize part in sustaining our economic expansion. Over the past six months, the artificial intelligence buildout has contributed more to American economic growth than all of consumer spending, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mims\/status\/1951256592642441239\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wall Street Journal\u2019s Christopher Mims<\/a>. Should anything cause America\u2019s tech companies to pull back on data center construction, the US economy could quickly sputter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Trump\u2019s trade and immigration policies likely explain the bulk of this slowdown in growth. Through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/416526\/la-protests-trump-ice-deportations-border-crossings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ramped-up internal enforcement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/100-days-of-immigration-under-the-second-trump-administration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restrictions on legal immigration<\/a>, Trump has succeeded in shrinking America\u2019s foreign-born labor force while deterring the arrival of new migrants. Largely as a result of his policies, America has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/live-blog\/2025-08-01\/us-employment-report-for-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shed 1.7 million immigrant workers<\/a> since March. Earlier this month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasfed.org\/research\/economics\/2025\/0708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve of Dallas estimated<\/a> that Trump\u2019s immigration policies will lower annual GDP growth by about 0.8 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Meanwhile, Trump\u2019s tariffs are almost certainly dampening both consumer spending (by generating high prices that deter shoppers) and business investment (by raising input costs and uncertainty). As of last Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/research\/state-us-tariffs-july-30-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yale\u2019s Budget Lab estimated<\/a> that Trump\u2019s tariffs would lower real GDP growth annually by 0.5 percentage points. Trump\u2019s most recent batch of duties will almost certainly lower growth even further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Typically, when economic growth slows, inflation tends to cool. After all, lower consumer spending and business investment translates into reduced demand for goods and services. And when the demand declines, sellers are often forced to cut prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Yet inflation in the US today is actually accelerating, even as growth slackens. Consumer prices in June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/31\/business\/pce-inflation-fed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were 2.6 percent higher<\/a> than they had been one year earlier, according to Commerce Department data released last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Food and energy prices tend to shift volatilely, so economists often focus on \u201ccore\u201d inflation, which excludes both categories. And core prices in June were 2.8 percent higher than 12 months earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Both of these rates were higher than they had been in May. And the underlying data strongly indicates that Trump\u2019s tariffs are largely responsible for inflation\u2019s resurgence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Over the past three months, the prices of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickTimiraos\/status\/1950904602167005187\" rel=\"nofollow\">non-housing services<\/a> (such as air travel or car insurance) grew at a 1.85 percent annualized rate. That\u2019s an encouraging data point, as services had been the major driver of inflation last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">But a sharp rise in goods prices counteracted that disinflation, with core goods prices climbing at a 3.7 percent annualized clip in the second quarter. And price growth has been concentrated in trade-sensitive goods, such as home furnishings and electronics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">In short, the data suggests that America plausibly would have enjoyed a return to the Fed\u2019s 2 percent target inflation rate this year, had Trump not manufactured a surge in the cost of imported goods.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of a recession is rising<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">America\u2019s economy still shows some signs of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The unemployment rate remains at 4.2 percent, a relatively low level by historic standards. And after falling by 0.3 percent in May, inflation-adjusted consumer spending ticked up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/31\/economy\/us-pce-consumer-spending-inflation-june\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by 0.1 percent in June<\/a>. Meanwhile, aggregate weekly payrolls \u2014 the sum of all wages paid to private-sector workers in a given week \u2014 was <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickTimiraos\/status\/1951263510005973431\" rel=\"nofollow\">5.3 percent higher<\/a> in July than one year earlier. This represents an improvement relative to June, when total weekly wages were up just 4.5 percent on the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">US consumers still boast significant spending power. The AI arms race doesn\u2019t appear to be ending anytime soon. And Trump\u2019s recent package of tax cuts \u2014 while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/unpaid-tcja-extension-would-shrink-economy-cbo-says#:~:text=In%20a%20recent%20long%2Dterm,ultimately%20reduce%20after%2Dtax%20income.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detrimental to growth<\/a> in the long term \u2014 could boost demand in the short run. Perhaps for these reasons, betting markets <a href=\"https:\/\/kalshi.com\/markets\/kxrecssnber\/recession\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">currently give<\/a> the US economy an 85 percent chance of avoiding a recession by year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Nevertheless, America\u2019s economic outlook is much gloomier than it was one week ago. Trump\u2019s trade policies have already nudged the US toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/407296\/stagflation-trump-tariffs-recession-inflation-risk-odds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stagflation<\/a>, a simultaneous rise in inflation and stagnation of growth. And most of Trump\u2019s tariffs have yet to actually take effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">Many sectors are already responding to rising import costs by shedding payroll. If that trend continues, and unemployment rises, consumer spending will likely dip. Faced with less demand, more employers will need to lay off staff, which would further erode spending. A recessionary spiral could ensue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixi lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg1\">The Federal Reserve may try to preempt that dynamic by cutting interest rates in September. But if Trump\u2019s tariffs continue to lift consumer prices, the central bank could find itself at an impasse: The Fed normally raises interest rates when prices are too high, and cuts them when job growth is too slow.
