{"id":579182,"date":"2026-04-12T04:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T04:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/579182\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T04:50:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T04:50:16","slug":"albanys-wadsworth-center-ready-to-step-in-as-cdc-pauses-some-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/579182\/","title":{"rendered":"Albany&#8217;s Wadsworth Center ready to step in as CDC pauses some testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALBANY\u00a0\u2014 Officials with the state Department of Health\u2019s Wadsworth Center say they can step in to help other states after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suddenly paused some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/news\/headline\/2026-04-01-cdc-temporarily-pauses-rabies-pox-virus-testing\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">specialized laboratory testing services<\/a>, including\u00a0for rabies and other infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has proposed significant reductions to the CDC\u2019s budget in its latest request to Congress, and has also sought to rescind or reallocate public health funding that\u00a0Congress previously approved, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrippsnews.com\/politics\/the-president\/trumps-cdc-is-canceling-600m-in-hiv-and-std-funds-to-four-democrat-led-states\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">including $600 million<\/a> for prevention programs for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/health\/cdc-rabies-mpox-tests-paused.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported last week <\/a>that the CDC pause affects select laboratory testing capacity, including for rabies and\u00a0mpox\u00a0(formerly known as monkeypox). Dozens of specialized tests have been paused or are under review, according to information cited in that report, though some may resume. The CDC provides\u00a0testing for certain pathogens to assist state and local public health laboratories that cannot conduct them.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdc.gov\/infectious-diseases-labs\/php\/test-directory\/index.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CDC website lists 31 tests<\/a> under the heading \u201cCurrently Unavailable Test Orders\u201d that are \u201coffline,\u201d and have been paused or discontinued as of April 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leonard Peruski, director of the Wadsworth Center in Albany, told the Times Union that the lab, with the support of Gov.
