ISLAMABAD, Pakistan \u2014\u00a0Vice President\u00a0JD Vance<\/a>\u00a0said the US and Iran failed to strike a peace deal to end the six-week war\u00a0rocking the Middle East<\/a>, blaming Tehran\u2019s refusal to give up its nuclear ambitions \u2014 leaving uncertainty over whether fighting will resume.<\/p>\n

Vance delivered the quick-hit update after 21 hours of grueling negotiations in Pakistan, noting meaningful discussions were held with Iran but none that brokered a deal on terms laid out by the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,\u201d Vance told reporters in Islamabad.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s bad news for Iran much more than it\u2019s bad news for the United States of America.\u00a0They have chosen not to accept our terms.\u00a0So we go back to the United States having not come to an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said a major sticking point was Iran\u2019s refusal to agree to not develop\u00a0a nuclear weapon<\/a>\u00a0or even seeking the tools to build one, insisting the US needed an \u201caffirmative commitment\u201d on the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the core goal of the president of the United States,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what we\u2019ve tried to achieve through these negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the hours-long talks, very few details were made available \u2014 leaving the world to speculate about what would come from the past six weeks of war.<\/p>\n

For weeks, the two sides have been far apart on negotiations, with the Iranians demanding total sovereignty over\u00a0the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the right to enrich uranium, no limits on their ballistic missiles program and reparations for infrastructure damaged in the war.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0top priorities are to reopen the strait to allow oil to again flow freely\u00a0and\u00a0crushing Iran\u2019s nuclear enrichment program to stop\u00a0them\u00a0from building a nuclear bomb.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were quite accommodating,\u201d Vance said, adding that President Trump told him to \u201cmake your best effort\u201d to strike a deal \u201cin good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did that, and unfortunately, we weren\u2019t able to make any headway. We leave here with a very simple protocol, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We\u2019ll see if the Iranians accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vice president said he was in \u201cconstant communication\u201d with Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the all-night talks, saying they spoke about a dozen times.<\/p>\n

Both Trump and Rubio\u00a0were attending<\/a>\u00a0UFC 327 in Miami when Vance made his announcement.<\/p>\n

Vance ignored The Post\u2019s questions about whether the two-week cease-fire is over and the war is back on.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear whether fighting in the Middle East, which began on Feb. 28, will resume.<\/p>\n

Shortly before Vance\u2019s brief\u00a0three-minute\u00a0update, the\u00a0Iranians posted on X<\/a>\u00a0that they \u201cwill not forgive the heinous crimes\u201d committed by the US and the \u201cZionist regime,\u201d referring to Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have not forgotten and will not forget the experience of America\u2019s breaches of promise and malicious acts,\u201d the nation said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing can or should deter us from pursuing our great historical mission toward our beloved homeland and noble Iranian civilization. The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to utilize all tools, including diplomacy, to secure national interests and protect the country\u2019s well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe success of this diplomatic process depends on the seriousness and good faith of the opposing side, refraining from excessive demands and unlawful requests, and the acceptance of Iran\u2019s legitimate rights and interests,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

They said discussions included the Strait of Hormuz, war reparations, the lifting of sanctions, a complete end to the war, and \u201cthe nuclear issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe heavy loss of our great elders, dear ones, and fellow countrymen has made our resolve to pursue the Iranian nation\u2019s interests and rights firmer than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrea Stricker, deputy director and research fellow for Foundation for Defending Democracy\u2019s Nonproliferation Program, told The Post Saturday that she wasn\u2019t surprised the nuclear issue was at the heart of the failed talks, adding she believes the cease-fire will now \u201ccollapse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uranium enrichment and maintaining a nuclear weapons pathway are intrinsically tied to the ideology of the regime,\u201d Stricker said<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shows the US is not negotiating with chastened regime pragmatists, but the same old Islamic Republic. The cease-fire is likely going to collapse unless the regime has an eleventh hour turnaround in its approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe US team meant business and did not budge on their nuclear red lines, and should be commended.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0lengthy\u00a0negotiations marked the first time in more than a decade the Americans and Iranians were in the same room for talks \u2014 since the Obama administration negotiated\u00a0the 2015 Iran nuclear deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vance was joined by Special Envoy\u00a0Steve Witkoff\u00a0and Trump son-in-law\u00a0Jared Kushner<\/a>\u00a0at the luxury Serena Hotel in Pakistan\u2019s capital city, where they met with an Iranian delegation led by Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.<\/p>\n
