The 45-year-old has trained for a wide range of roles in the decade and a half since \u2013 from Blade Runner 2049 to the newly released Project Hail Mary and, in a full-circle moment, a shredded  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/entertainment\/a43781266\/ryan-gosling-barbie-ken-shaving-his-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/entertainment\/a43781266\/ryan-gosling-barbie-ken-shaving-his-legs\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ken\" data-node-id=\"4.9\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ken<\/a> in Barbie.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Among them, though, 2016\u2019s La La Land is where Gosling\u2019s athleticism really came to the fore. Working with trainer Arin Babaian, the Canadian actor built a foundation strong enough to meet the demands of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/entertainment\/a68805911\/strictly-lewis-cope-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/entertainment\/a68805911\/strictly-lewis-cope-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dancing\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dancing<\/a>, moving fluidly and lifting co-star Emma Stone overhead.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018I used our days to build up his  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a29208586\/best-leg-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a29208586\/best-leg-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"legs\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">legs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a757285\/best-ab-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a757285\/best-ab-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"core\" data-node-id=\"13.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">core<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a759269\/10-best-back-exercises-for-building-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a759269\/10-best-back-exercises-for-building-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"back\" data-node-id=\"13.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">back<\/a>,\u2019 Babaian told  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/health-fitness\/how-dancing-in-la-la-land-helped-ryan-gosling-get-stronger-w458737\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/health-fitness\/how-dancing-in-la-la-land-helped-ryan-gosling-get-stronger-w458737\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Men&#039;s Journal\" data-node-id=\"13.7.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Men&#8217;s Journal<\/a>. \u2018Those were the elements that were going to allow him to carry his own  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a756325\/10-best-bodyweight-exercises-for-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a756325\/10-best-bodyweight-exercises-for-men\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodyweight\" data-node-id=\"13.10\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bodyweight<\/a> and have complete control over his movements. If you are going to be picking people up over your head, you had better be pretty strong.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I wanted to find out just how strong Gosling needed to be. While I wasn\u2019t about to hoist an unsuspecting member of my local gym into the air, I did attempt a key workout Babaian devised to get Gosling into peak condition. Here\u2019s how it went.<\/p>\n<p>The Workout<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"body-tip css-1nai55u emevuu60\">Complete 5 rounds with minimal rest between<\/p>\n<p>Is It Worth Trying?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I\u2019m not surprised Gosling was able to build such a strong base \u2013 this workout ticks every box. Not only does it strengthen the legs, back,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/g754592\/7-best-exercises-for-bigger-shoulders-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/g754592\/7-best-exercises-for-bigger-shoulders-fast\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"shoulders\" data-node-id=\"30.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shoulders<\/a>  and core, it also delivers a tough conditioning hit that mimics real-world athletic demands.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">After jumping off the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g29427102\/best-treadmill\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g29427102\/best-treadmill\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"treadmill\" data-node-id=\"35.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treadmill<\/a>, I quickly realised the main challenge wasn\u2019t just muscular, but cardiovascular. 400m isn\u2019t a trivial distance to run at pace, which makes it tough to go straight into deadlifts. For that reason, I took a brief 10-20-second pause after each run to reset and prepare for the lifts. It made it much easier to maintain decent form throughout the following exercises \u2013 without it, I\u2019d have quickly lost focus and risked injury.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To keep things efficient, I stuck with the same weight throughout, rather than adding and stripping plates between movements like the push press and back squat. That meant using a 50kg bar for the entire workout \u2013 a comfortable starting point that became progressively more demanding as the session went on. Movements that felt smooth early on became noticeably slower in later rounds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Using the same weight also added more of a challenge for my shoulders, though the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"volume\" data-node-id=\"43.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">volume<\/a>  on the legs helped balance things out. And running under fatigue is no joke. Especially when each round takes around 4-5 minutes and your muscles are crying out for a break.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Where this workout really comes into its own is in the exercise selection. From the deadlift through to the back squat, each movement flows naturally into the next. For example, once you finish your final power clean rep, the bar is already in position for a front squat. As someone both stubborn and competitive, I was determined to complete full rounds without stopping between exercises \u2013 something that became increasingly difficult as fatigue set in.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"51\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I completed my runs on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g63145359\/best-curved-treadmills\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/g63145359\/best-curved-treadmills\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"curved treadmill\" data-node-id=\"51.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">curved treadmill<\/a> positioned next to the barbell, but running outside would be just as straightforward. Dumbbells could also work if you don\u2019t have access to a barbell, making this an easy session to adapt with minimal equipment.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"55\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It\u2019s a great option when you\u2019ve got around 30 minutes and want to test your capabilities, build muscle and challenge your aerobic system at the same time.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"59\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It\u2019s also a workout I\u2019ll come back to semi-regularly. The time element means I can aim to improve my score or simply reduce rest periods. A genuinely tough session that\u2019s well worth testing yourself against. <\/p>\n<p>How to Do the MovementsDeadlift<img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"individual performing a deadlift exercise\" title=\"Individual performing a deadlift exercise\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1400\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2000f9c7-de67-4dd6-b256-8f456f625383.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"66\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Hinge down with a flat back and grasp the bar with an overhand grip. With your core braced, drive your feet into the floor and lift your torso. Thrust your hips forward to stand tall, keeping the bar close to your body. Lower under control and repeat.<\/p>\n<p>Power Clean<img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"weightlifting exercises performed by an individual\" title=\"Weightlifting exercises performed by an individual\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1400\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/f5ca675a-9c8d-4d35-bd75-f1f17dcdd528.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"72\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As you finish your final deadlift rep, maintain your torso angle and drive through your feet to keep tension in the lower body. As the bar passes your knees, begin to open your torso while keeping the bar close.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"76\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Extend your hips, brushing the bar up your thighs. As you reach full extension, shrug and pull your elbows high. Drop under the bar into a quarter squat and catch it with elbows forward and a full grip. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted. Sit into the squat, lowering until your thighs are at least parallel. Dip slightly at the knees, then drive up explosively, using your legs to help press the bar overhead. Step back and set your stance just wider than shoulder width. Brace your core, keep your chest up, and lower into a squat until your hips drop below your knees.
