WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump announced that the US will begin a sweeping blockade of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, vowing to fight back against Iran\u2019s\u00a0\u201cWORLD EXTORTION\u201d and ensure that no one paying tolls to the regime<\/a> will\u00a0get\u00a0through the critical oil chokepoint<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump claimed that\u00a0the\u00a0negotiations with\u00a0Iran that\u00a0concluded Saturday without a deal \u201cwent well,\u201d but faulted the Islamic Republic for refusing to budge on its nuclear program,\u00a0which he described as\u00a0\u201cthe only point that really mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEffective immediately, the United States Navy<\/a>, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>,\u201d Trump declared on\u00a0Truth Social<\/a>\u00a0Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point, we will reach an \u2018ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT\u2019 basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, \u2018There may be a mine out there somewhere,\u2019 that nobody knows about but them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTHIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil supply once traversed through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>. Iran has used drones and missiles<\/a> to deter oil vessels from traveling through the critical chokepoint.<\/p>\n

Iran claims to have placed mines in the Strait but has lost track of them. It has attempted to charge a toll of $1 per barrel of oil for ships to get through safely,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to US officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran has\u00a0sought to use revenue from those tolls to rebuild its country after the Operation Epic Fury attacks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The president didn\u2019t lay out a specific timeline for when the blockade will officially begin, but teased that it\u2019s happening \u201csoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump announced a\u00a0fragile two-week cease-fire with Iran last Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0after threatening earlier that day that \u201can entire civilization will die tonight\u201d if\u00a0Tehran didn\u2019t cut a deal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

US officials, led by Vice President JD Vance, met with Iranian negotiators in Islamabad, Pakistan<\/a>, for close to 21 hours of marathon talks to broker a more permanent end to the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But by the end of those talks, Vance<\/a> announced that \u201cwe have not reached an agreement,\u201d<\/a> and\u00a0US\u00a0officials left. Few details of those negotiations were made public, but Trump claimed that \u201cmost points were agreed to,\u201d just not the nuclear issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn many ways, the points that were agreed to are better than us continuing our Military Operations to conclusion, but all of those points don\u2019t matter compared to allowing Nuclear Power to be in the hands of such volatile, difficult, unpredictable people,\u201d Trump wrote in another\u00a0Truth Social<\/a>\u00a0post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t matter because they were very unyielding as to the single most important issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also announced Sunday that the US will \u201cbegin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits\u201d and warned that any Iranian ship that fires at the US will be \u201cBLOWN TO HELL.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally and, at an appropriate moment, we are fully \u2018LOCKED AND LOADED,\u2019 and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran!\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the US sent two battleships through the Strait of Hormuz\u00a0as part of an attempt\u00a0to restore confidence in the critical waterway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have minesweepers there now. We have highly sophisticated underwater minesweepers, which are the latest and the greatest,\u201d Trump told Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures.\u201d \u201cBut we\u2019re also bringing in more traditional minesweepers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand the UK and a couple of other countries are sending minesweepers. A lot of countries don\u2019t have minesweepers.\u201d<\/p>\n
