The five-year deal goes through the 2029-30 season and will pay May $25.5 million, more than $6 million more than his original deal. The average annual salary is $5.1 million.

May led the Wolverines to a 27-10 record last season, his first on the job after six years at Florida Atlantic, winning the Big Ten Tournament and reaching the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.

Michigan announced the extension hours before the Wolverines hosted Michigan State on Feb. 21, noting the deal added one year to the original contract. Manuel told reporters that, about a week prior, he’d told May: “You’ve accomplished far more than I ever thought you would at this point in your tenure here.”

Manuel also said that the contract was not finalized. “We still need to dot some i’s and cross some t’s,” he said, “but that should be done very soon.”

It took about five months. Grasso was the last of the trio to sign, doing so on July 15, though the contract went into effect May 1. MLive received the contract through a records request.

May will receive $4.6 million in the first year of the deal, which runs through April 30, before annual raises that boost his salary by $250,000 each year, topping out at $5.6 million. Under his previous contract, agreed to in March of 2024 after May was hired from Florida Atlantic, he was set to earn $19.125 million over five years, an average annual value of $3.825 million.

Should May leave before the first year of his deal is up, he’d owe Michigan $7 million. The buyout drops to $5 million the next year, then $3, $2, and $1 million for the remainder of the contract. If May is fired without cause, Michigan would owe him the remainder of his salary.

Last season, 17 men’s basketball coaches made at least $4.6 million, according to a USA Today database published in March, including five in the Big Ten. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo ranked fourth nationally at more than $6 million.

May, 48, went 126-69 at Florida Atlantic, taking a program that hadn’t been to the NCAA Tournament in 20 years to the Final Four in 2023 and following it up with another Tournament appearance.

Michigan was in need of a new coach after firing Juwan Howard, who lasted five seasons and bottomed out with an 8-24 record in 2023-24.

If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
