Races to Collect Creators Before Rivals Can Do the Same"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/fox-corporation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fox-corporation\" data-tag=\"fox-corporation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox Corporation<\/a>, the next Colin Cowherd or Jesse Watters isn\u2019t likely to come from the ranks of TV-host wannabes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox\u2019s various operations, which include Fox Sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/fox-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fox-news\" data-tag=\"fox-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News<\/a> and the Tubi streaming service, rarely act in tandem. In recent months, however, many of them \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fox-investment-lighthouse-creator-studio-influencers-1236432594\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">even the ad-sales department<\/a> \u2014 have begun reaching out to digital-media entrepreneurs, also known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/creators\/\" id=\"auto-tag_creators\" data-tag=\"creators\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creators<\/a>,\u201d in a bid to find new talent that might just be the next hot talker or buzzy showstopper the company needs to keep viewers and business partners coming to its screens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox News, which has minted outspoken personalities like Megyn Kelly or Sean Hannity for years, surprised observers recently by striking a licensing deal with the principals <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fox-news-ruthless-podcast-licensing-deal-porter-berry-1236460252\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of the popular conservative \u201cRuthless\u201d podcast<\/a>, part of a bid to expand its portfolio of opinion programming. Fox Sports seems poised to feature the outspoken commentary of Dave Portnoy, the founder of upstart outlet Barstool Sports. Tubi is actively cultivating independent artists\u2019 video. And Fox Corp.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fox-acquires-red-seat-ventures-megyn-kelly-tucker-carlson-1236302452\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent acquisition of Red Seat Ventures,<\/a> a production company that specializes in managing many of the business affairs of now-independent media figures including Piers Morgan, Kelly and Tucker Carlson (some are former Fox News stars).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSuch maneuvers aren\u2019t just for courting young digerati who might bring new fans to Fox. \u00a0\u201cWe are pretty good at thinking about how content can live across digital and traditional platforms simultaneously,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paul-cheesbrough\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-cheesbrough\" data-tag=\"paul-cheesbrough\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Cheesbrough<\/a>, CEO of Fox\u2019s Tubi Media Group. \u201cSo, if one of our Fox talent wants to expand their creative offering beyond the current Fox platforms themselves, how can we kind of lay the rails? How are we going to help them do that? And then for the more organic creators, how can we be the best partner for them as they go on their journey to extend the platforms that they\u2019re on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox has good reasons to replenish its ranks \u2014 and embrace formats toward which younger news and sports aficionados gravitate. Since the company\u2019s controlling Murdoch family divested its studio assets and many of its cable networks in 2019, Fox has focused most intently on live TV \u2014 namely sports and news. As a result, the company is much more reliant on its behind-the-desk personnel than some other media contemporaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the streaming era, modern audiences <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/tv-news-faces-creator-chaos-anchors-exit-for-digital-dreams-1236477444\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seem to crave talent that is more outspoken, unpolished and raw.<\/a> NBCUniversal\u2019s Bravo will this week telecast a \u201cculture awards\u201d show led by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, the host of the podcast \u201cLas Culturistas.\u201d It\u2019s the first time NBCU is showing the event. MSNBC has tested filling programming slots on weekends and holidays with the video version of <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/nicolle-wallace-msnbc-podcast-latest-tv-news-show-1236464556\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new interview podcast hosted by Nicolle Wallace<\/a>. More noticeably, ESPN has licensed the popular streaming show led by the outspoken Pat McAfee \u2014 and hasn\u2019t always forced him <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/pat-mcafee-espn-disney-tv-sports-1235867581\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to play by the Disney sports giant\u2019s content rules.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTraditional media companies still have a strong foothold with older consumers. But it\u2019s the younger ones who will help sustain the business and keep sponsorship dollars coming in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe digital creators are accustomed to having \u201clonger-form conversations\u201d and confiding more in their audiences, says Porter Berry, president of Fox News\u2019 digital and new media operations, who was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fox-news-ruthless-podcast-licensing-deal-porter-berry-1236460252\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">given new oversight over opinion-focused podcasts from Fox News<\/a>. \u201cThe relationships are intimate and personal,\u201d he adds. Fox News recently named conservative influencer Brett Cooper, who is backed in part by Red Seat Ventures, as a new contributor to its TV programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox Corp. has been trying for months to create close ties with influencers. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/news\/fox-buys-outkick-clay-travis-1234967380\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The company in 2021 acquired Outkick<\/a>, a sports-focused site led by entrepreneur and online personality Clay Travis. At the time of the purchase, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch described Travis as a leader \u201cin sports news, and more critically, sports opinion.\u201d More recently, its ad-sales division purchased a stake in Lighthouse, a production studio for creators that is part of the portfolio of Whalar Group, an independent company that develops influencers and other content personalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne goal is to find authentic ways of working with digital talent that won\u2019t force them into typical media models, says Stephano Kim, chief strategy and operations officer of Fox Advertising, during an interview. There\u2019s no reason to \u201ctry to jam it into a traditional framework,\u201d he says. Ultimately, you take away or even destroy what made you think it was special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSome of Fox\u2019s work at Tubi may shine a light on the company\u2019s ultimate direction. The streamer in June unveiled a plan to showcase video work from influencers including Mythical Entertainment, the production studio founded by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, and Dan and Riya, a Canadian YouTube duo known for the series \u201cBeverly Valley High.\u201d The streamer also launched \u201cStubios,\u201d an outlet for creator-based content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKey to this venture and many others is not removing these up-and-comers from the environments in which they already thrive, says Cheesbrough. \u201cWe don\u2019t see us partnering with creators out of TikTok or out of YouTube, and them leaving that behind. Instead, we are designing ways for them to co-exist within both ecosystems,\u201d the executive says.
