Breathe Bangkok, a clean-air advocacy group, is urging the government to take urgent action on stalled legislation aimed at tackling the country’s worsening PM2.5 air pollution crisis.<\/p>\n
The fine dust pollution was “toxic air” containing carcinogenic substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals, and prolonged exposure would harm public health, it said.<\/p>\n
The situation had been exacerbated by delays in policy action, with key legal mechanisms left in limbo following the dissolution of parliament. The group outlined key demands, starting with a call for the government to revive draft laws that lapsed when parliament was last dissolved.<\/p>\n
It said the government has the authority to push for the resumption of deliberations, particularly on the Clean Air Bill and the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) Bill. It also urged the authorities to resume the legislative process from where it left off, rather than restarting from scratch.<\/p>\n
Public health must take precedence over political considerations, the group said, warning delays in addressing air pollution could lead to rising cases of diseases.<\/p>\n
The group also called for stronger legal tools to ensure transparency and accountability, including the adoption of the PRTR framework to improve public access to pollution data, as well as a clean air law incorporating economic and scientific mechanisms to address both domestic and transboundary pollution.
