The Canadian Open has approached the latter stages, with the quarterfinals set to get underway in Toronto. <\/p>\n

Following a walkover in his match with Francisco Cerundolo, top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the last eight<\/a>, where he\u2019ll face defending champion Alexei Popyrin<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Second seed Taylor Fritz<\/a> will play Andrey Rublev, while Ben Shelton<\/a> will meet Alex de Minaur in a top-ten showdown. <\/p>\n

Making up the fourth quarterfinal is a clash between Alex Michelsen and Karen Khachanov, who will go toe-to-toe for the second time this year. <\/p>\n

With a strong American presence in the second week of the tournament, something has happened on the ATP<\/a> Tour which hasn\u2019t occurred for over two decades. <\/p>\n

After compatriots Fritz, Shelton and Michelsen advanced, there will now be three US players appearing in the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time since 2004.<\/p>\n

The last time was at Indian Wells 21 years ago, where Andre Agassi<\/a>, Andy Roddick<\/a>, and James Blake all booked their place in the last eight. <\/p>\n

None of Agassi, Roddick, or Blake went on to make the final, however, which ultimately featured Roger Federer<\/a> and Tim Henman.<\/p>\n

The success of American men\u2019s tennis currently on the ATP Tour<\/p>\n

Currently, 13 Americans are ranked within the world\u2019s top 100, with seven of them taking up spots in the top 50. <\/p>\n

Michelsen, Sebastian Korda, and Brandon Nakashima make up ATP numbers 34, 33, and 32, respectively. <\/p>\n

Ahead of them are former Grand Slam semifinalists Frances Tiafoe<\/a> and Tommy Paul<\/a>, who have both cracked the top ten before. <\/p>\n

Flying the flag near the very top of the rankings are world number seven Shelton and number four Fritz. <\/p>\n
