ALPENA \u2013 Local officials have released a letter today updating residents on current flooding conditions, water rescues, the water levels at local dams, and included a list of requests to make sure the city\u2019s water and sewer systems operate as needed.<\/p>\n

To the citizens of Alpena County:<\/p>\n

We are aware of the flooding in some areas of the County and are actively working with first responders to evacuate those at risk. Please stay away from flooded areas and do not drive through high water. Stay off roads that are impassable.<\/p>\n

All Alpena County dams are operational and functioning as they should.<\/p>\n

The Friendship Room located St. Bernards Church at 324 W. Chisholm St, Alpena is available for anyone in need of shelter during an evacuation due to flooding<\/p>\n

The City Department of Public Works facility on 1001 Long Lake Avenue, Alpena will have sandbags available to the public. You do not need to live within the City to utilize. We will have some bags on pallets and can fill more as needed. These will be available until 4 p.m. inside the facility; however, we will leave a pallet of sandbags available after hours. If you need additional assistance, please contact the non-emergency line for Central Dispatch at 989-354-9111. If you have an emergency, please dial 911.<\/p>\n

The City of Alpena Water and Sewer Department is asking all residents and businesses to immediately reduce water usage due to current conditions within the sanitary sewer collection system. This includes all City of Alpena and Charter Township of Alpena water and sewer customers.<\/p>\n

At this time, the sewer system is experiencing surcharge conditions and is operating at or above capacity. While the system remains functional, all pipes are full, and wastewater is moving very slowly through the system. There is currently no additional capacity available, and continued high usage may lead to backups or service disruptions. If you have water in your basement any additional usage of water in your home will only add to this flooding issue in your basement.<\/p>\n

Residents and businesses are strongly urged to limit water use to essential needs only, including:<\/p>\n

-Flushing toilets<\/p>\n

-Basic sanitation (handwashing, minimal hygiene)<\/p>\n

-Cooking-related water use<\/p>\n

Please temporarily refrain from:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Running dishwashers<\/p>\n

\u2013 Taking long showers or baths<\/p>\n

\u2013 Doing laundry<\/p>\n

\u2013 Any non-essential water usage that drains into the sewer system<\/p>\n

Reducing water use will help prevent further strain on the system and protect homes, businesses, and public infrastructure from potential sewer backups.<\/p>\n

Alpena crews are actively monitoring the situation and working to manage system capacity. <\/p>\n
